  • About this deal:
    • This price is $150 lower (25% savings) than the list price.
    • This price matches the last time this laptop was a Frontpage Deal.
    • Deals on 17.3" laptops have been less common than the more popular smaller sizes. This is a good budget choice for those who have light to moderate computing power needs and wish to have a larger than average display.

I love this box, I got it last time it was on sale at this price. I'd been looking for a sub-$500 1080 17" laptop with a fast processor for a few years. It has a big enough drive that I partitioned it and made it dual boot LUKS encrypted Linux. F9 is the OS choice key, if anyone is interested. This thing literally boots either Windows or Linux in seconds and is very responsive. So far 8 GB of RAM has been fine, although I don't really use Windows, so that may not be enough for heavy Windows use. I like the screen, big and high resolution, often when I've had a 1080 laptop I find myself enlarging web pages, with a 17" screen I occasionally find myself shrinking them. Battery life is not its strong suit, but it seems like it can handle a few hours. The CPU is apparently almost as fast as the i7 desktop chip that I put in a Hackintush I built for some friends a 4-5 years ago.

Yes, there is a space for it and a motherboard connector. But no cable or drive caddy, so you need to get a cable and either figure out the caddy or use double sided foam tape.

See the posts by Hat Trick in the previous thread:

Discussion of cable - if you're using tape, figure out how the cable will run before taping the drive down (blue faces up when inserted in ZIF "HDD" connector on motherboard)

Photos with bottom cover removed - the first one shows the big empty space with room for a 2.5" drive, and the nearby HDD (SATA) connector

PDF of manual [hp.com] - see
- p 33 for info on removing the back cover (need to remove the strips of rubber/silicone feet, be sure the double sided adhesive tape comes off at the same time) and
- p 40 for a limited discussion of adding a SATA drive

No usbc charging, no backlite keyboard, no touchscreen. This should be added to note.

Bigger keyboard area and still they have a small ctrl, alt, delete and fn keys. Wouldn't it be cool if they made the keyboard modular and you could snap it what you wanted, like mechanical or not, backlit or not, bigger keys, num pad or not, or even a custom made one.

I know I am just dreaming. Probably should just be happy that they haven't soldered the hard drive and power cord in ... yet!

One of the popular cash back sites is offering 5% back at Staples…. That takes another $22.50 off the price. That's much better than the 2% SD "rewards" and you don't have to bother with all the browser extension BS.

I bought this the last deal, and have used it for work and such since. I really like it for stay at home work, I take other devices for on the go. I added a stick of 8 gb for a total of 16gb (DDR 4 3200), and am going to add the HDD (there is a spot, but you need a cable), it'll be perfectly fine for a few years.
TLDR: good deal for the specs and upgradeable.

how is the screen on this one? I know it only has 250 nits, but still bright and sharp? or trash?
The 2nd post here has a link to the previous deal for this same laptop that has plenty of information if you need answers.

Bought one of these. Using it now. Yeah, it's not a premium, but it's very good for the price. The 17" is a noticeable change.

If only the laptop was in black. They don't seem to make 17.3 inch laptops in black anymore. (Apart from Dell which are super expensive)

Silver laptops suck because you have to see them in person to see if the keyboard legibility is an issue.

Get another $45 off the price with the following steps if you have the Chase freedom card:

Starting 10/1, the Chase freedom card is offering 5% cash back on PayPal purchases. Additionally, one of the popular cash back sites is offering 5% cash back at Staples. Buy this laptop on 10/1 going through the cash back site, then pay with PayPal.

Net price ends up being $405 after the cash back.
