If his device had broken 5 months ago and he returned it, that's one thing. But, to go and return it because there's suddenly a different device? "Come on, man." It's literally the reason why they changed the unlimited return policy to 90 days for electronics, because people were grossly taking advantage of it.

Trying to make a receiver that's future proofed and backwards compatible with every product from Apple, Sony, Google, Amazon, Sonos, pandora, Xbox, 8K, Bluetooths,HDMIs and 30 version of Dolby is impossible.
And then buyers want them to be low priced and family friendly.
And if they don't give you your money back for some crazy reason, they'll usually either give you store credit (which you can put towards the new item), or just let you pick out a 'replacement' for the same price or lower. If it's higher, you just pay the difference.
I don't think it's really a dick move. You literally pay them an annual fee just to shop in their store. The rest of the perks are there to both further entice you as well as stave off the competition. They uphold that mighty return policy because it's what keeps people coming back - the safety and security that you can make high priced purchases without the full commitment. MOST of the time we really do stay committed - we just needed that safety net.
Do some people abuse it? Surely. But I doubt it's enough for it to really make any difference to them at the end of the day. They've got a pretty solid business model that's positively thriving, even in these times. So seriously, if you really want this instead, I say go for it. That's the beauty of it. It'll make you happy, right? You'll walk out of there feeling like a king with your new product in hand, and for them, well, they can rest assured you'll be returning again and again and, of course, renewing that membership. 👍🏻 It's a win/win.
Rule 1) Don't be a Dick
Rule 2) If the people you are doing it to (Costco) would think you are being a Dick then you are being a Dick
Rule 3) If you have to justify why you are not actually being a Dick... You are being a Dick.
Rule 4) If doing it to your neighbor would qualify you as a Dick, then doing it to Costco is being a Dick.

with that being said yeah kind of a dick thing to do
Do I need eARC for 5.1, or will ARC do? I'm a bit confused by this. Thinking I'll just connect all my devices to the TV and just connect the receiver via ARC (including Series X, PS5, NVidia Shield). I know I will lose DTS but other than that, is there any reason to upgrade?
Also, technically this will be a power downgrade (from 100W to 75W) if I move to this receiver. Not sure if it makes a huge difference but wondering if I should wait for 100W models.

I think some companies use these various features as a means to tempt consumers to upgrade their hardware on a regular basis.
I for one purely use my HTR for video switching and audio, and nothing else. All my internet streaming services I run through a device connected to the receiver.
