Is any one 1500W electric heater really much better than anything else? I like the oil filled radiator-style ones just because they're silent and safe, but aren't there tons of ceramic heaters with fans out there? Anything special about this one?

no, a 10 dollar 1500 watt heater will put out just as much heat as this heater. dont waste your money unless you really need a remote.
1500 watts is the max you can draw from a 120v 15amp circuit in your home. if you want more heat you have to move up to a 240v circuit. i dont think they sell any heaters for a 120v 20amp circuit.
1500 watts of heat is 1500 watts of heat, doesnt matter how fancy they try to make the heater sound, its the same amount of heat.

Oil filled radiators are not good. I thought hte same thing as you and bought oil filled radiators for the house a couple years ago, and ended up returning them after a few weeks. It takes forever for them to begin to heat up a room, at least an hour before you feel it, and even though I bought some well regarded/reviewed ones, the built in thermostats on them are just not effective. They are measuring air temp next to the heater, not in the room, so they can never know how hot it actually is and will often overcompensate, making the room way too hot. I thought oil filled are good for keeping a comfortable temp at night, but they would always either make hte room too hot or not warm enough, and on the average it resulted in my highest electiricty bill ever.

Bottom line is a fan-based heater is much better. You push the button, point it at you, and you feel warm immediately. It circulates the air so that the room comes up to temp evenly, and the internal thermostat can do its job. These are good for supplementary heating, but if you're using it as your main heat source, then forget these things and get a heat pump. There are portable units on amazon for around $400. It's a bigger up front investment, but its much more energy efficient than cermaic/oil heaters. Heat pumps are like magic. It uses 1000W of electricity but adds 3000W of heat to your house.

I have to disagree. Yes, oil-filled heaters are slow to heat up a room, but I find that mine are great at keeping a stable temp over time. The thermostats seem to work fine, for me. And a heater with a fan will never be silent, which I value.

I'd never consider using a space heater as a main heat source, just not something I need to do. Just used to have a bedroom that was always colder than the rest of the house, and at times we didn't need to heat most of the house to a comfortable temp, so space heaters made sense. Didn't really need to use one at all last winter after moving to a newer house that had an HVAC engineer as the previous owner, LOL.

Yeah, thanks for confirming what I thought. I don't need one, just wondering because my mom has been shopping for a heater and thinks the $150 ones will work better than the 50 ceramic ones. She's frugal anyway and has a good grasp on sci/tech/math, so I'll have no trouble convincing her that 1500 watts is pretty much the same as 1500 watts in a different model.

Thanks a lot for this video. I've been researching and trying to figure out a space heater, and was about to jump on this one at Costco for $69.99. I saw it today and thought I'd check Home Depot and SD first. Went to Home Depot and everything was similarly priced, so I figured I'd go back to Costco tomorrow and grab this one.

I'll be looking for a $15-20 one now. Thanks!
