How good is the iGPU? Better than a 1050?
Doubt it. 5800H is a beast with a top notch igpu, but I don't think it could beat a full gpu with fast dedicated vram. The 5800H will be held back because it uses slower system ram.

Seems like a good system for Linux since you get a great processor without having to deal with an nvidia dgpu.
Asus is actually notorious with Linux compatibility, especially the newer models. When you are lucky, you will get the linux OS to install but the entire laptop is not utilized.
This is tempting. I work a lot with Matlab and Vivado, and I don't think I really need a dGPU. Just lots of ram and a fast processor. And I don't play any video games. I wonder how the quality is though. Never had an Asus Zen before.

Worse than a 1030 GT. Youre looking at 720p LOW 30-40fps in AAA games that arent esports titles. So basically dont expect to actually play games on this.
I have the same model with 4700U 16GB and 1TB. I don't think this notebook hold well on 4700U regarding TDP, it will easily become too hot to keep up the performance. 5800H has TDP of 45W and 4700U only has 15W, so you couldn't put a high expectation on this one.

I'm in a similar boat. Been looking for something decent for a while but everything is a "gaming computer" with a hardcore GPU I don't need or soldered 8GB ram. Was really hoping for something with Thunderbolt but this may be worth the tradeoff.
Who is this for? who needs high TDP 8 core/16 threads and no dGPU in a 14" package? The 400 nit screen is nice, but I've got the same 63Wh battery and better graphics with a lowly 2GB mx450 for less than half the price with the 8GB ryzen 5 5500U version. This still has no thunderbolt (as it's not intel cpu) no faster ports, still no dp or hdmi over usb c (so no more than two monitors unless you want to use a software/USB converter or wireless casting).

this has soldered 16GB, only wifi 5 card, and probably way more cores and higher power consumption than most anyone needs. unless you're running something extremely cpu intensive that can take advantage of all those cores than something more sensible like an i5-1135g7 intel or ryzen 5 5500u are more than adequate and fast enough for most people's work needs with just as much gaming ability as this cpu does. Put the money where it really will pay off - features like a brighter more color accurate screen and bigger battery are always nice. The CPU in this laptop will give you all the poor battery life of a gaming laptop with almost none of the benefits.

Thanks, joeparker54, your analysis is compelling. Wish I could get something similar to this with 32GB ram (to support 3-4 vms) and $1K or less. That's prolly unicorn thinking, though.

Thats good analysis.
My laptop will be plugged in 90% of the time and going to multiple monitors. I basically haul it back and forth daily, so weight may be a feature, but it isn't exactly a long distance haul. Been dealing with large and unwieldy SQL databases and data visualization tools which is why I was focusing on the CPU but I'd like to be able to expand beyond 16GB if needed.
