Every time one of these comes up I'm so confused as to whether I should buy it. So far I have gathered it must be from japan, must be IH, must be 3-5 cups. What else? What's the gold standard model to get I'm tired of waiting for a deal on these things and want some good rice! /rant

10 cup is tooo big for most people. I have a 5.5 cup and wish I had a 3 cup. The counter footprint is smaller. Plenty of rice for our 2-person household. Though someone at some point said the 3 cup doesn't make quite as good rice as the 5.5 cup version. I don't know if that's true but it always struck fear in me.

Unless you have a big family or are eating way too much rice/carbs, I recommend holding out for the 5.5 or maybe 3 cup version. It's easy to click and buy this, then have a giant rice cooker on your counter forever, or lug a giant rice cooker on and off the counter.\

......

That all said, does anyone know if the fancy expensive Zojirushis (or other brands) make passable sushi rice? All I need is 'decent' sushi rice. The fancy ones have a 'sushi' setting, but never heard anyone talk about the results, ever.

Your pressure cooker almost certainly does not cook rice perfectly. It might make rice that you're happy with. It might make decent rice quickly. It might be convenient to not have a dedicated rice cooker. But it is not making perfectly cooked rice

I just bought the Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 one hour ago. Should I buy this instead?
Get a Cuckoo IH and pressure model instead (I've had both). I got mine from Macy's, they're currently quite a bit more, but worth it IMO. Pressure cooking quality is amazing.

I had a non-pressure zojirushi (I don't remember the model #) for a while, then we upgraded to a NVC18 and more recently got an NWC18. There is a difference between the non-pressure version and the higher end units in terms of texture and flavor but it is very slight and is really only noticable when cooking some specific types of rice. Both the non-pressure and pressure versions we noticably better than my instant pot though. All my personal opinion and YMMV.

Sushi rice is rice with sugar and rice vinegar (and a pinch of salt) in it. Mine has the same setting for regular/sushi and have had 0 issues.

If you already have a rice cooker, just put slightly less water in there when you cook the rice for sushi. This prevents the rice from having excess water when you add the sugar and vinegar mixture.

I only eat basmati rice and it doesn't really come out great in these rice cookers. Too mushy and wet.

Most Japanese brands selling in the US are not made in Japan. IH does make a big different. I purchased a Tiger IH(old model with clay pot) from Amazon Japan, it costs a bit more money, but the rice come out better than the Zojirushi we purchased here. However, you also need to spend more money with the rice when you have a nice rice cooker. We used to have Jasmine rice now we are using short grain rice. But again for most non asian family, I think a $80 Tiger rice cooker from Costco is good enough.

I love my zojirushi IH rice cooker but I'm on my 4th bowl in 11 years and getting close to needing #5. Their nonstick coating only lasts a couple years and that's if you baby it, which I do. Replacement bowls are almost $100 which sucks, but it really sucks when the non stick coating starts coming off and I need to decide between stretching a little longer and my health, that stuff isn't good to ingest.
Never put any utensil in the bowl except the rice paddle that comes with it and it will last forever. I've never made anything except rice in mine, that might make the difference too. Mine still has a nice interior after 8 years. I've used it 'only' about 100 times in that time. I suspect you are trying to 'baby' it with a metal fork.

Don't use the included plastic spatula, go and buy a silicone one. Clean with sponge or microfiber. Also try Tiger rice cookers, for the same price range as Zojis their pots are much thicker and have more layers in the coating.

Sorry, but I've got to call you on this - you seem to have a very limited perspective, to be suggesting the previous poster's using something other than the rice paddle, or similar, appropriate utensil. 100 times in 8 years is, arguably, ~incredibly~ light use, compared to what a lot of the users commenting in this post cook, and probably not a good basis for your opinion. You're averaging about once per month across 8 years, while many families are cooking rice on a daily, or multiple times per week, basis. That's 10x to 30x your usage. Of course your pot isn't flaking its coating - it's only been used a hundred times! Some families do that in under 4 months! If any respectable rice cooker company 's pan fell apart after 100 uses, they'd have hordes of people banging the doors down on their corporate offices..

Beware that some models expect to be plugged in all the time and need to have the time set when ever unplugged.
I absolutely love my zojirushi rice cooker. It has fewer options, but there is something to say about simplicity. It must be 15 yrs old now. Still looks and acts like new. Use it 4-6 times a month. While it can cook almost anything, it is up to the human to be smart enough to alter the cook settings and water levels and soak times. For example, mine doesn't have a brown rice setting - crazy right - so I know to let it soak for 2 hours BEFORE the cook cycle starts and to adjust the water level. I have a chart on the fridge to handle the correlation for rice "cup" to water amount for each type of rice. The cooking bowl only has 2 lines - white rice and porridge.

Have a Cuisinart rice cooker/steamer that always, always, overflows when doing rice no matter how much I reduce the water levels. I use it for steaming and hard boiled eggs, which it does perfect every time.
I suspect any Asian-make rice cooker from an Asian market would be fine. Dated a girl who had one that looked 50 yrs old and it worked amazing for any sort of rice she made. Think I asked her about it ... she said $40.
