Or if you want to increase your disk space for steam library or other software installation space but you only have 1 nvme slot on the board then this is the way

Why not upgrade your OS instead? Maybe something newer with... security updates?
I am worried some old (Win XP era) programs will stop running. Also, I will have to update the motherboard BIOS which means I will have to re-enter all the settings I have changed over the years. Since there are no Windows 10 drivers for the motherboard, I have read horror stories of ports not working, PC not coming out of sleep, etc. I will buy a laptop/PC, if there are good BF deals, as backup before attempting this. I then have plans to make this PC a file server. Let's see how it goes!

In the real world, it does not show difference in render or game load speed. nVME vs Sata III SSD is a marketing gimmick.
My NVME PC boots up and games load like 30-40% faster like I said.

It's noticeable just not earth shattering.

Just clone your Win 7 install and do it, it's easy to roll back that way. Drives like this come with Acronis.

I had trouble with blue screens after going Windows 10 and had to do the clean install option where it doesn't keep your data, had to reinstall all software etc. Then it was fine.

Thanks VarmintCong. I will install Windows 10 on a different drive. I am more worried about messing something up during the BIOS update. I can always go back to the Win 7 drive if Win 10 doesn't work out, but it may not be easy to recover from BIOS issues or missed BIOS settings. Haven't messed with the BIOS for ages!

I have one older PC booting on one of these and a newer one booting on a SN750 NVME. On paper the latter is like 7X faster but in reality it feels like 30% faster or something.
The vast majority of people would be fine with a SATA SSD. NVME shines in tasks most people will never do. Again, not saying nobody needs them, but if you just need extra storage, don't have a free NVME slot and aren't such a power user, most SATA SSDs will be just fine.

It may actually be 7x faster in the real world as well, but diminishing return is really at play here.

Back when people were upgrading from mechanical to SSD, the difference is jaw dropping because a 7x faster speed means bootups were cut from minutes to seconds. A 5 minutes bootup is now cut to around 40 seconds.

Going from SATA SSD to NVME isn't as impressive because a 7 seconds boot cut to 1 second isn't all that impressive realistically. Add the motherboard logo flash of 2 seconds and you're really just seeing 9 seconds boot cut to 3, your observation of the 30%.

I would get one of these, but I stocked up on a bunch of 1TB SSDs from ADATA before they started covertly switching out the innards like the controllers in their SATA SSDs, and also I prefer NVMe instead so I'll probably have to pass on this for the time being.

Great for the XBOX one series internal drive R&R!
And these make great external drives for an XBOX.

Same here! Already sent one back. No more ADATA for boot drives for me.

I have 3 MX 500s laying around to use for XBOX drives.

Any thoughts on how this Crucial compares to the Samsung 870 QVO SATA III SSD? The Samsung is also on sale for $169.99 on Amazon [amazon.com].

PS3 takes a SATA 3 drive which this is. Seems I remember swaping one out on my old PS3 and XBOX 360. One of them has a side compartment door.

I did not use any special software BTW.

If you've got a desktop get a pci-express card for like $15. I did this last week w/ the samsung ssd deal and the speed improvement vs. my sata ssd drives was dramatic.

Is this going to be the market price for SSDs throughout Black Friday?
