I like this comment because it makes it sound like this processor can only handle surfing the web. Intel sure has screwed things up because my i5 6500 can easily surf the web AND play games.
Pure bullshit right here. You have no idea what you are talking about.
??

As the post below you pointed out the CPU mark score is ~60% higher for the 11th gen 11600

+60% is not 'negligible' ..

Not that I think its worht the extra $100 for most folks though.

Don't be surprised if you get a tray unit. However the price is great
It is 100% a tray unit, not boxed. Tray units are sold in bulk to HP, Dell etc.

Was planning to buy i5-11600k. Not planning to overclock, do you think the extra $100 would be worth it?

Wait for the 12400 non-K. It is supposed to be a beast and will be out in a month.

Problem is there will only be a few expensive motherboards unless I wait a few months

Last time I got a cpu from staples it already had thermal paste residue on it even though it was labeled new.

Possibly. But the 11600k should at least be cheaper then.

Keep in mind the the i5-11600K will also need a better cooler than the relatively easier to cool i5-10400.
Quote from ctslive :
The i5-11600k is
  • Big, Better Faster it does give you more power (CPU Mark - 20004 vs 12374)
  • Gives off more almost double the heat (Max TDP 125W vs 65W)

If you are NOT planning to overclock, I say save the $100.

But the final decision is up to you.
The i5-10400 actually uses 134W at PL2 or when turbo boosting while the i5-11600K uses 224W at PL2. The i5-11600K is faster but it is mostly because it will draw more power and run hotter.

Terrible deal. Buy the 11600k for $100 more and get a process that's twice as good with even better on board graphics.

It depends on what you to use it for, I bought it for my Xpenology NAS build, perfect low voltage processor with enough power for plex etc..

I heard they prefer these over amd in Canada now that the natural gas glut is over to heat their houses. It's like burning coal in your fireplace like in the 1900s.

I prefer to process currency transactions, a greener alternative, on the latest process node GPU and let my amd processors idle to heat my own.
