The model's replacement has just released. By most reviews, the mark ii version is an immensely better lens. Not only optically better, but quieter, and about 1/3rd lighter.
Such massive upgrades are not typically case with mark ii revisions, but appears to be the case here.
If spending this much, probably better to spend a bit more and get the new version.

I am going to sell my 70-200 GM MK I towards the new version, but I am probably going to take a bath!
I knew this would happen but I use my 70-200 so often for sports assignments I need it until it's last breath...
The current version is still good (if you got a good copy), it's just this new version looks like a proper, modern "G Master" and sony's lenses since the 135 GM have been really awesome. One thing I havent seen is light transmission testing on the MK II. The MK I is about 1/3rd of a stop brighter than my 400 2.8, if they can match or better the MK I it's going to be bonkers.
Agree with Larron above. My pov, if this is going to be your primary or secondary lens, may as well get the new Mark II version just announced. If this is just a nice to have, then this is decent sale (and better if you have access to an education pricing where it's discounted to $2,038).

Be aware that supply issues are expected this holiday season with camera gear, so you might have issues getting a the new one.
