Looks like the old version. Supposedly the new version is better in every way except cost.

If the lens hood is any indication, you're right, it is the old version. The new version has the fully cylindrical lens hood. I'm looking at mine right now. 👍

What would you guys pay for a used one of these? I'm debating between a used one of this and a new Tamron 70-180mm. Used ones in my area regular pop up for $1600 or so. The new one is way out of my price range.

While sharpness looks similar for both, my decision will be based on the usage scenario, the tamron 70-180 weights just half of this gen1 Sony, so it's great for trips. (And increase willingness of picking up a camera). The Sony probably produce better picture because of the optical stabilizer alone.

What if the body already has stabilization? Does the stabilization in the lens work in conjunction with it? If it doesn't, does the stabilization in the lens work better than in camera?

I do mainly video and I had an S5 before returning it. I'll give Pansonic credit, their IBIS is phenomenal in comparison to the IBIS on my A7 IV.

i find Sony's IBIS totally ineffective when it tries to compensate tele lens. In Lens OS is much better -- for still photos. but since sony's IBIS will turn off when using the lens OS, video mode appear quite "jumpy". Yes, S5 has awesome combined IBIS+OS, i think the only thing that beats it is the Canon R5/R6 with supported lenses.

The MK I is still a nice lens, but the MK II blows the doors off of it in almost every way. It's lighter, image quality is improved, and it will focus as fast as the 400 and 600 mega primes. It also has G-master 3.0 stuff like the improved hood and locking design, etched serial numbers instead of a sticker (lol they ever even did this), the manual aperture ring and iris lock, as well as the 3 mode steady shot.

The only thing I liked about the MK I is the zoom throw was a bit shorter

The Tamron 70-180 is awesome but if you're doing fast action, losing half of the shooting FPS on an A9 or A1 is kind of a deal breaker when going for that exact frame you want

Buy the Tamron unless you want to use teleconverters to add versatility to the Sony.

Everyone's complaining that it isn't the new one ($2800 msrp) but this is the cheapest I've seen this older one. Previous low I saw was about $2100. Just pay 40% more for the new one for 30% weight reduction and slightly sharper images.

And an EDU discount gets this older lens below $1.8k.

Great comparison video of the lenses here. I have the tamron 70-180mm. Its a great lens, feels a bit cheap but produces a great image. I just pre ordered the new Tamron 35-150mm which will probably replace my 70-180mm due to the crazy amount of versatility.

Is there an ETA on that lens? There are reviews since the end of 2021 and there's no sign of the darn thing. That's the one I want too.

*edit* Adorama seems to have them. $1899 ...ouch.
