Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).

Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:

- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.

- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)

- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.

The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.

For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Get your free annual credit report, and see when your last 5 credit cards accounts were open ( most business card accounts are excluded from 5/24, and won't count in the last 5).

Yes, and if you spend in their bonus categories, you'll get even more points quicker. Companion pass is 125k miles, but if you're a rapid rewards member before 12/31/20, you only need 100k more

We are making it easier for our Rapid Rewards Members to earn tier status and Companion Pass in 2021 by giving each Rapid Rewards Member this boost:

15,000 tier qualifying points (TQPs)*
25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points (CPQPs)*
10 qualifying one-way flight segments towards tier status
25 qualifying one-way flights towards Companion Pass
All Rapid Rewards Members with a Rapid Rewards account opened by December 31, 2020 will get this boost toward earning tier status or Companion Pass benefits for 2021-2022. These points will be deposited automatically in your account within a week.2

Southwest has the lowest chance of going bankrupt of the majors… they're only being canceled because employees are protesting the vaccine mandate

For those who had Rapid Rewards accounts open on Dec. 31, 2020, Southwest effectively lowered the requirements for earning the Companion Pass in 2021 by depositing 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points in accounts earlier this year, meaning you'll only need 100,000 points to qualify for Companion Pass by the end of this year if you had an account open at the end of last year.
