Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).

Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:

- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.

- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)

- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.

The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.

Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

This is a great summary and exactly my conclusion after reading through the thread. Honestly should probably be in the wiki. Repped.

I am going to consider this card. Sadly, I have not traveled much the past 2 years but this is a solid way to do some discounted traveling in 2023. I am going to circle back to this and see which card route I want to go but pretty sure I will jump on this.

Why so? It helps me make a dent into my 12k spending, without triggering the bonus that I want to trigger in 2022?

I'm moving and have a bunch of big expenses planned, so I'd love to time this as well as I can to have the december statement hit as early in the month as possible. What's the ideal date to apply to ensure that happens?

If you are not trying to get companion pass then what you are saying makes sense. If you ARE trying to get companion pass then it makes no sense AT ALL to put close to $2000 on the card this year because you will need to do it NEXT year for it to count toward companion pass. Understand?

Can we redeem the points as statement credit or do you have to use them to book a flight?

$0, basically, since they are Southwest points that are not cash out-able, and not UR points that can be cashed out.

If using them to book Southwest flights, then you can get around $1300-$1400 in value from them.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned valuing 1 RR point = $0.016, which I found to be close for my travel earlier this year. You could stretch it a bit, depending on where you travel.

I applied/approved 19th, received via rush delivery today (22nd), payment due date Dec 8, that makes closing date 11th or 12th. Use this information for refrence
Update:
22nd-Messaged them to change due date to 1st of every month.
23rd- chase changed due date to 1st starting Nov 4th statement. That means my new statement date is 4th of every month.

Can you PM me this, please?

From Southwest website:

IMPORTANT: Know your credit card's annual earning cutoff date.
Your December statement closing date is the cutoff for purchases made with your Rapid Rewards Credit Card to count towards a Companion Pass for that calendar year.

For example, if your December statement closes on December 16, points for purchases posted to your statements made after that date will not count toward qualifying points for the year.

Actually you can get the card now. Spend less than 2000, let's say 1800, before the statement in December, spend the rest after December statement, you will get the bonus points with January statement. Make sure not to spend ore than 1800 before Dec statement
This it it!
