Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

For any wondering (as I did) whether you can get the CC (and companion pass bonus) and then have your spouse get the CC (and the companion pass bonus) and have two free tickets for your family every time you are travelling, no...that cannot be done.
Per the T&Cs: "A Companion's reservation is not considered a purchased flight, and therefore, another Companion Pass reservation cannot be booked from it."
Apparently, I am not the only one who had that idea. I suspect someone was getting a great family trip rate for a while before SWA put that policy into effect :-)
This product is available to you if you do not have a current Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card and have not received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months.
When is says "a new Cardmember Bonus within the last 24 months" is that referring to any Chase credit card, or just an SW card?
Thanks
90% certain they mean "SWA card bonus". Sapphire Preferred, as an example, should be a different class of card.
Good deal, you can get the companion pass pretty easily now with this card. Annual fee isn't that much either and there are ways to get the annual fee covered
Can you please PM me. Interested to know how to get around the annual fee.
Someone earlier in the thread mentioned valuing 1 RR point = $0.016, which I found to be close for my travel earlier this year. You could stretch it a bit, depending on where you travel.
1.6cpp is possible, but really only if you are booking flights where fees are a large portion of the cash price - typically the low $$ flights.
Looking at my recent SW redemptions, I have gotten close to 1.6cpp when redeeming for flights that would have been ~ $60 cash. At ~ $160, the value falls to ~ 1.4cpp, and going up to a $260 cash flight, the cpp falls to ~ 1.3.

You BOTH can have companion pass and you'd each get a free companion (the companion can be ANYBODY you choose, but you only can change the name 3x in a year). So if you are a family of 4, you'd only have to buy 2 tickets. What most of us do is we rotate the companion pass with the bonus offer since you can apply every 2 years (so doing it now for 2022-2023, then the companion in 2023 for 2024-2025, etc).
I am NOT WRONG, you are MISSING THE POINT of why it is stupid to spend ANYTHING in 2021 IF YOU DON'T NEED IT.
Say you spend $1,800 in 2021 so not to hit the threshold of $2,000 --- that means you have to spend ANOTHER $1,800 in 2022 as you just lost 1800 points you would have EARNED for 2022. It is NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. This has nothing to do with the $2,000 spend and not hitting it....it's called wasting a spend you have no use for...
Also, that 50,000 points doesn't get you the companion pass...it is 125,000 points, so you'd start the year with 50,200 points....instead of 52,000 points, then 112,000 points once you hit the 2nd bonus.
LOL, I tried to tell someone this earlier and was met with the same stupid
"logic" from them. Sometimes good deeds do get you punished if the person you are trying to help is stupid, which seems to be the case in this instance..
SWCard: Points earned every year on your Cardmember anniversary. 3000-6000-7500.
Does this points earn on the day you sign up and next year when you renew? Or does it like give you once signed up and another on 1/1/2022 ? I consider signed up for Priority card if this is the case.
2. I have legitimate business, wonder if business card bonus can stack with this individual card bonus.
Does anybody have insight into how long this offer will be around? We currently have a card we'll need to cancel before reapplying but it has a balance from this month's spending we need to zero out before we can close.

Said on the ads 12/7/21 , but you should apply before cancel, since cancel will drop your score.

On your card anniversary....so if you got approved today, it would be 10/24/2022, 10/24/2023, etc etc for as long as you keep the card.
