Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).

Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:

- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.

- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)

- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.

The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.

Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

You can apply now but spend after December statement close
Agreed, you should be fine after the December statement close. Also you can call / message Chase and ask them to move your statement closing date if needed.

I am personally a bit paranoid so I never spend over the bonus requirement until January 1st (e.g. I personally wouldn't spend over $1900 this year), but I think you should be fine to spend over as long as it's after December statement close. Your points *should* hit in January.

Also don't forget you can apply for a Business card as well. That one has $5,000 requirement so might be a better card to spend on this year.

I just got both - this one (well, Priority flavor of it) and the Business Performance (which requires $5k spend for $80k credit). So I'm not going to need to spend $25k, just $7k total to get the companion pass.

I am NOT WRONG, you are MISSING THE POINT of why it is stupid to spend ANYTHING in 2021 IF YOU DON'T NEED IT.

Say you spend $1,800 in 2021 so not to hit the threshold of $2,000 --- that means you have to spend ANOTHER $1,800 in 2022 as you just lost 1800 points you would have EARNED for 2022. It is NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. This has nothing to do with the $2,000 spend and not hitting it....it's called wasting a spend you have no use for...

Also, that 50,000 points doesn't get you the companion pass...it is 125,000 points, so you'd start the year with 50,200 points....instead of 52,000 points, then 112,000 points once you hit the 2nd bonus.
Sorry, you are wrong. Shouting in caps doesn't make you right.

The name of the game is getting the companion pass as early as possible. I normally do two cards - one personal and one business (you used to be able to do two personal varieties, but not any longer). I already got approved for the personal Southwest Priority and this morning I just got approved for Business Performance ($5k spend requirement, 80k bonus).

I am spending $1800 on the personal card this year and $4800 on my business card. Come January 1st, I will spend last $200 on my personal card and last $200 on my business card. When the statement closes, I will have 130k points total posting in 2022 (50k from persona card, 80k from business card). A few days later I will get my 4th companion pass for remainder of 2022 and entire 2023. The $6600 of my spend won't count in 2022 (since it will have be done in 2021), but obviously it doesn't matter.

That's absolutely the best way to go. If you don't understand that, it's too bad but I hope other slickdealers will figure it out. I got my companion pass in January 2 out of 3 times (first time I didn't do it quite right and got it later in the year).

I also think it's fine to spend $1800 this year even if you are not applying for a business card. Yes that $1800 won't count towards the required $25k spend to get the companion pass (in addition to the $100k bonus), but many people have plenty of natural spend at the end of the year anyway - gifts for friends and family, holiday travel, etc. Even though money spent this year doesn't count towards the companion pass, you will still get miles for it (Southwest Rapid Reward points) that you will be able to use when you have your companion pass. So there is no downside to spending this $1800 this year (and it most certainly isn't STUPID as you so rudely stated).

I know it won't help you. You have your mind set and you think you are right. That's all good, you do you. I hope this explanation will help other slickdealers though. I learned quite a few good tricks on this site, and while I'm sure nobody will even say "thank you" to me for this post, it's all good.

My lord are you dense....you can still the companion pass in January by not spending any money in 2021 and have every dime count towards next year...You aren't the only one who does this every other year. Also, you don't have to spend it on January 1st. So long as all your spend is AFTER the December statement date (or in my instance, I will sign up on Dec 6th, then I can spend everything from Dec 7th-January 7th and it will count towards 2022).

Applied for both business and priority card today and was put on decision hold (7 days waiting time...duh). Also the business card triggered an credit enquiry. I thought business cards do not impact the credit score.

Business cards don't report as open accounts to your credit report, but they always have been a hard pull. Unless you have a really thin credit file and/or are applying for a mortgage in the next couple of months, the effect of the extra hard pull should be meaningless.

Applying for both cards on the same day wasn't a particularly smart move, but hopefully you at least submitted the application for the business card first.

When applying for both the Business and Personal card, which should be applied to first? How long of time between can I apply to the other card? Same day? Should I wait a few days?

Why is he dense ?? He clearly explained that he applied for both the personal and business so by spending most of the requirement now he can achieve Companion Pass early in Jan, All the early spending won't count as he doesn't need it. 50k+80k= 130k. If I go his route I would want to start spending now too as I prepare myself to get CP as soon as Jan comes.

Actually this works very well. We (me and wife alternating) have done this way last three times and managed to get the pass in first 7-10 days of January. This year will be 4th attempt. Simple and works great !

Both husband and wife, even at the same address, have independent 5/24 counters

Should apply for Business first as it doesn't add to 5/24, especially if you are at 4/24 as the business card is limited by 5/24. Also should wait a few days between card applications still not more than 2 in any 30 days.

Would I be able to take advantage of this offer if I haven't had a bonus on my current sw premier card in over 2 years? or would I have to cancel and sign up for new card to get deal?
