Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

But quickly do I apply now or wait for nearer 12/7?
I plan to use card to prepay Fed taxes to get 12K spending.
So I want card statement to close after 1/1 to get companion pass for remainder of 2021 and then 2022?
Prepay fed taxes to get extra $$ to buy ibonds, 7.21%!
You'll get the companion pass for 2022 and 2023 if you time it correctly. and you have the entire next year to spend $25k; there are easy ways to get these points without spending as well; it might not be appropriate to say it here
So to ensure that 100k is received in one calendar year, I should not spend $2000 until January 1st and then try to spend $12k as fast as I can?
I currently have 35k in points but I don't think I could spend $12k in the next 2 months and then it would only be for 1 calendar year instead of being 1.5 calendar years.
Points you earned must post after 1/1/2022. If the billing cycle of you credit card is on the 5th of each month then it means you can start spending after 12/5 as the next billing cycle will be on 1/5/2022 and thus points will only post after 1/5/2022. If the billing cycle of you credit card is on the 20th then you must wait until 12/21 to start spending. If your target is only to get the 50k points (and not companion pass) then you can start spending immediately.
Getting Companion pass for 2022-23 needs posting 125000 rapid rewards after 1/1/2022. For that:
Best path: Get SW performance Bus card for 80K points and any personal SW card for minimum 50K.
Finish spending bonus threashhold limits (5000 and 2000) only after the December statements so that the bonus points post only in/after January statements. You can spend upto 4800 and 1800 before December statements if you choose because just the bonus points (130K) are enough for the pass. Make sure not to hit the threshholds before December statements.
2nd path: Get one of the personal cards for 100000K bonus. In that case you should spend atleast 12000 after December statement to get the 100K bonus and 12K spend points, total 112K points in 2022.
For the remaining 13K you need
Either spend another 13K on the card or earn some points by referring someone or any combination (Starting January referring bonus may or may not be current 20K).
This will be my 4th consecutive Companion pass and will be getting in 1st 10 days of January.
Hope the above summerized info helps someone.
PS: After you are approved for the card(s) you can call chase for expedited delivery and change due date to 1st of the month to give you more time to spend in December.
If I do this deal, when will I next be eligible for a personal SW card? 2 years after the first 50,000 points hit my account or 2 years after the second 50,000 points hit my account?
If I got the 100k card and already made 1 purchase did I screw myself? Or I just have to make sure I use it more in December so those points hit in January?

You only screwed yourself if your 1 purchase was over $2000. You need to make sure you hit the $2000 spend threshold to trigger the 50k bonus AFTER the close of your december statement.
If I use my Southwest card to BUY more points. Does that purchase amount get rewarded in points? And does my purchased points go towards the companion pass?
Well I wish I had read this thread before I got the card. I put $2000 on it already. I didn't realize that I could delay the start and basically get 2 years of companion passes. The bill hasn't been sent yet, but everything is already paid off. Is there anything I can do to delay this, or do I have to suck it up and let it be a learning moment? If not, what would be the effective time of my companion pass? Luckily my fiancé has an LLC, so we can easily swap the process over to her next time.

Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you. Lesson learned.

You'll want to be very careful with December spending. There have been cases where the statement date is at the beginning of December, and the spending threshold was met in mid December AND they paid off the balance that same December. In that case the bonus points hit the same year and not in January.

This is what I am planning. Can you confirm, if this will work for trying to get the Free companion pass for next year
I got the card in October and my statement ended today
October statement (Oct 8 to Nov 8) - Spent $1700
November Statement (Nov 9-Dec 8) - will spend $100
December statement (Dec 9- Jan 8) - Start spending like crazy as I will earn 50K points for spending $2000 in the first 3 months and rest towards free companion pass
Is my understanding correct? After November statement is generated on Dec 8, I can start spending and dont need to wait for January as the statement is going to get generated in January and and in that month, I will see 50K points - which should count for FY 2022.
Can someone confirm if my understanding is correct? If not, please guide me
