Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Not necessarily. In my case applied/approved Oct 19th, 1st statement Nov 4th, 16 days after approval
Please disregard my above comment. I just remembered that the statement date was moved to 4th on my request
Do you happen to remember what was original statement date?
-Is it possible given the remaining timeline to use a referral for getting an extra 20k? Is that referral link available very soon after application acceptance? What is the timeline/requirements for that referral bonus to hit?
A referral link can be generated instantly.
Just google chase refer a friend, and fill in the info. Link Here[chase.com]
Easy to do.
And The referral bonus hits quickly....like within 30-60 days, assuming the person uses the card and activates it.
I did a referral from Oct 21st application and 20,000 referral points hit my account for the late Nov 30 billing statement.
I'm not sure what am i missing here but why would we wait to spend until Jan 2022? It stated that if we spend 12k in the first 12 months after account opening, then we should be good right?
Okay, so how are people earning companion pass here. We need 125k points.
So spend 12k to earn the 100k points. Thats 100k, plus a minimum of 12k points for the spending. so thats 112k already. 13k left. When do you get anniversary points, say if you opened this card early december. Will you get it before the new year or after? Whats the easiest way to get the remaining 13k without having to open a business card. If I open a card on December 1st and refer a friend to open a card the same day, will we both get those 20k points after the new year or before?

You got the jist of it, just refer your friend at the latest date when the promo ends, then it should hit next year so you get 20k points then you start spending 12k.
I have a question. If I donate to a charity by credit card on 12/31/2021 for like 10k, am I safe that the points on the 10k as well as bonus would come in 2022? I need that 10k spent to help for me achieve the 125k and not come in on 2021.

The points post on your following statement. So you can donate/spend anytime after your December statement. If your 1st statement is going to be in January then too anytime is fine.
BTW you can also pay any amount in estimated taxes (1040ES) using your credit card towards your 2021 taxes and you will get that amount refunded to you when you file your 2021 taxes
I'm ready to open and have several purchases planned for December. Can someone please outline exactly what my timeline should be? When should I open, and when should I spend?
