Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Do we "buy" the companion pass w/ 125k points? or is it a qualification thing? if we auto-get it from meeting threshold, does that mean we have 125k points to spend on flights for card owner?
Tip for those of you doing this last minute like me, if you log into your Southwest Account, you may have a "pre-approved" link at the top for this deal. I did that and then I didn't have to fill out the application, etc. I started filling out from this link. Just clicked through a few links and then it said my Priority Credit Card was approved and will be delivered in 7-10 days.

No, you qualify once you hit 125k points. Yes, you will have 125k points to spend. That is precisely why this deal has 40 pages of comments and everyone is going gaga over it.

Earning 125K points in a calendar year qualifies hi for the pass. You still keep those points to spend on flights. Actually you buy the primary ticket with those points and add the companion thus both of you fly without $$ cost. You only pay $5.60 per person in taxes.
I have a family of 4. I can hit $12k spending by end of FEB. so If I sign my wife up for her own card (sign both of us up tomorrow), she can then hit her $12k by May. Now all 4 of us are covered!
So is this what most ppl are doing? or perhaps another idea is to just have wife apply for her card in Dec 2022, then we can alternate going forward.
Interested in "strategies" for husband/wife situations who are each able to hit spending limits fairly soon. Apply both now, or alternate?
Cancelled a couple Southwest cards a month ago, andd just tried to sign up for a new one....got the 7-10 days wait...am I'm screwed? (I have credit score ~800, and plenty of income)
If anyone hasn't signed up yet and wants to know how to offset the annual fee, send me a PM
Yeah, this person is a New User...created this account two days ago. Their "trick" to offset the annual fee is to sign up under their referral code so they get an additional 20,000 points, then they claim they will paypal you $69. They have only been around (with this new username) for 2 days. Good luck with that
I currently have a Priority card but I called Monday asking if I could take advantage of this offer and if I needed to close the card before I apply. The rep said if it has been over 2 years since I received the bonus I could still apply and I DIDNT have to close my current card, I asked her 2x if she was sure about that and she confirmed. I applied for the Priority again. I just called to check status and the rep told me ive been declined since I already had the product. According to this rep I have to close my account, wait 1 billing cycle for it to clear, then reapply...too bad the bonus will be gone by then.

Just had a call with chase (see my response 2 posts below you) Unless the closed card has hit your credit accounts, highly unlikely youll be approved. I'm pretty sure you can check this on credit karma

Cancel your priority card and wait 2-3 days then apply for a different personal card not priority. OR apply for a business card or both.
BTW. First representative was wrong.
