Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

You'll get the companion pass for 2022 and 2023 if you time it correctly. and you have the entire next year to spend $25k; there are easy ways to get these points without spending as well; it might not be appropriate to say it here

My companion pass expires this year, but I still have 65k left over points
pro tip, have your spouse apply and buy her/his trips with your points and they can add you as a companion when they meet the spending, rinse and repeat every 2 years
so you never have to pay points for both.
The easiest way to get the remaining 25k is to book hotels thru the southwest website. Hotels will list with bonus miles and when booking you can add miles to the reservation for an additional charge. This summer I only needed 2 nights to get my companion pass.
Anyone else having issues with the "refer a friend"? Tried to refer my wife but it says "offer not valid" and defaults to a 40k offer......not sure if there is a glitch with their system or Chase just isn't allowing it.....
Ugh didn't get to it till today and realize I already had priority card since March. Nothing I can do now to besides getting a business right? What if I have wife get it and add my name to her account?

Yes, alternating between you & your wife seems to be the best way to do the Companion Pass.
Look on your SW Rewards account & make a note of the actual date that you received your signup bonus points. You can only get the Bonus every 24 months. I don't think Chase will allow you to have two Priority cards in your name, so in ~January '23 you'll need to cancel your Priority card.

Yeah I'm seeing the same thing. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned that the referral 50k/50k offer died on 12/1. Can anyone confirm that the 20k for a referral still works with the new 40k offer?

I inquired about closing date and Chase responded:
"Your first statement closing date will be on December 20, 2021, and your payment due date for this statement period is on January 17, 2022."
Can someone advise what is the right strategy to maximize companion pass for 2 years? Do I spend 2K in December and then 10K in Jan+Feb?
