Does this support VPN client mode? Is it easier to flash the Asus stock firmware? or dd-wrt?
Its been a while since I did it. I bought one, gonna have to do it again. I can't recall where I got the instructions to flash it to Asus. But google search will take you to the right place.

Once you get Asus firmware running, just go here and that should have the VPN capabilities.

Bestest bang for the buck hands down. Got two more. Tmobile gave me two for free. When the first one came without a power adapter, they shipped a new one. Went out and got a power adapter for the first one. I did not use either for phones but converted both to Asus Merlin firmware (currently on 384.17) and have been using both for the past 7 years. Not one time have they gone down or had to have a reboot. Not once!! Tmobile did not ask for them when I quit their horrible mobile phone service. Their mobile network is still horrible beyond redemption. No wonder they resorted to such gimmicks.

Yes. AiMesh is a mesh feature that will allow these routers to connect in a mesh. You can use it as a mesh or individually. Personally, I use them in an individual configuration since the mesh had slower bandwidths compared to my individual setup. I tweaked it as much as possible, but the BW was still below individual usage. Therefore, I put one downstairs and one up and keep them on different channels and have several SSIDs to choose from since they are both very powerful. You can tweak the Tx power on these and get good results for your house. I use them individually since I converted all the CAT 5 cabling inside the wall that was originally installed for phones to work for data. Still use a google voip phone for landline and it uses the asus to connect. Best damn routers.

They are lying. The power level is locked down via region/driver/hardware. You cant not haxor it up with firmware(the haxor firmware will allow you to amp it up to 2-3 watts, but the unit will ignore settings above its locked down limit). At best you can flash with some firmware that can be adjusted down, and a firmware that ignores sideband checks and goes into wideband mode regardless if someone else is transmitting on that channel.

Not a great router for mesh since you cut the bandwidth in half; its been in many homes so if your parents house needs an AC router then this is better than the gateways

I noticed when creating the new cfe at the hack page there is an option to increase the max power allowed. Is that not a functional change? I've personally never messed with the power output.

I've had this since t-mobile offered them for free. Hands down the most stable and reliable router I have ever had, even on the t-mobile firmware. Not sure if installing the asus firmware would make it better, but it has been great so far.
