Got it running again by setting variables to change the WAN port to use one of the LANs. That means having only two free LAN ports, but everything works as it did before. (This under dd-wrt, but may run under other OSs)
But of course if it's completely fried (flames, smoke damage, etc), then RIP.

I intended to keep it and even tried replacing the power adapter but it was solidly dead. I had an RT-N66U years ago that was hit multiple times, losing a port or so each time but still worked otherwise. I used it for years until it finally gave up the ghost which prompted the upgrade to the RT-AC68U.
With this last strike I finally figured out that lightning was coming in through the old phone wiring and disconnected it at the service box so hopefully these will have a long full life.
People say "struck by lightning" to mean 'rare' -- haha funny until your stuff is destroyed.

Have you experienced lightning at your place and the protection worked satisfactorily.
Mine is made by Seimens so want to beleive its marketing.
There is always a fine line between a sucker and cautious customer

Rather than setting in CFE, it's better to set that manually when running. Then if any problems, it's easy to adjust.

History shows was $40 a couple of weeks ago even for buying 1.

First, one lives life innocently, then bad things happen, then one raises defenses, then seldom does it happen again. But if it does, there's a sense of satisfaction that preventative measures were taken.
So short answer: No, nothing to test the surge protection since installation.
But I have heard there's a mystical aura that emanates from the surge device so that all future lightning strikes are defeated, along with all voltage spikes caused by a drunk running into a power pole down the street.
Just check by disconnecting it: All your electronics will be fried within a year.

Actually, I did check out the device (probably same model as yours) before buying. No snake oil found. (No worries on suckerhood.) I think they're legit and would recommend to others.
So far, so good.
