I bought one to replace a older dying thermapen and am extremely disappointed with it in comparison to the older one.
The metal probe is much much much harder to pull out.
The stupid display keeps flipping around, upside down, sideways, right side up, it's annoying as heck.
There is no lanyard attached or any way to attach a lanyard.
While it reads as fast as old one, it seems to take longer to settle on a final temp.
This is a great example of the old saying, "the enemy of good is better."

Sorry man, those who don't know, don't know.

I thought it was silly to spend more than $15 or $20 on a thermometer too, until I bought one.

I used to do a community fundraiser where I did ~2000 bbq chicken dinners in 3 days. I was constantly sticking birds to monitor their cooking progress and to ensure they were being held to temp. Back then upgrading to a 4s thermo saved me hours of time. If I still did this cook I would pay for 1s in a heartbeat.

That being said, for home users a Lavaworks Javelin would be just fine. Or a Thermoworks Pop.

If the price drops on the Mk iV it would really be considered a best buy as well. I'd love to see ~$50.

This brand is considered by many BBQ aficionado's to be the very best. Besides when they come out with a new model this will likely be the cheapest it will ever get.

Agreed on all points. I feel like this brand is like Texas Instruments calculators...best in class but starting to need a price adjustment.

I just had a Thermapen that died after 10 years of moderate use. Got a Thermapop when they were on sale a few weeks ago for $20. The one second readings are nice, but not worth the extra $$$ IMO.

I absolutely LOVE my Thermapen MK4! I might have to give some thought to picking up the new 1 second model and passing my MK4 down to my Mom. Smilie

For those of you looking for a simple, cheaper thermometer, I highly recommend looking into the ThermoPop. It's from the same company and is also widely recommended. I used it until I picked up the MK4 and really liked it. The ThermoWorks Dots are also pretty convenient for reverse searing, and roasting in the oven.

I bought the MK4 version of this when it was around this price. My wife balked at me buying a damn thermometer for this price. She thought I was nuts and had a huge argument. She thanked me come Thanksgiving came around, when her trusty $15 thermometer broke. She was legit panicking until I whipped this bad boy out. It's accurate, and almost instant and has never let me down in all my cooking and barbecuing. It just gets the job done. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Blah blah blah threadcrap blah blah blah. If you can't fathom why a thermometer would cost this much feel free to ignore. But as others have mentioned thermoworks and the thermapen is the standard for instant read thermometers. Could you spend half as much on something less good? Yep, it's like anything else. But if you're a cooking/grilling enthusiast these things are irreplaceable.

My thermapen mk4 is still going strong after five years and I've used it hundreds of times. I've picked up thermapops as stocking stuffers and they're solid but it's not really close. I'd worry about the reviews from folks who don't like this as much as the mk4 but otherwise this is as big a sale as you're going to see on these.

Not to check a single turkey. But to make hundreds or thousands of sticks a day it absolutely is. And for some folks, the calibration certificate is the other needed feature.

Wow, a lot of thermometer aficionados in here. Strangely cool to see. (Quality vs cheap, etc.)

If they offered a ThermaPoP ONE, I think they'd make a fortune.
