I bought one to replace a older dying thermapen and am extremely disappointed with it in comparison to the older one.
The metal probe is much much much harder to pull out.
The stupid display keeps flipping around, upside down, sideways, right side up, it's annoying as heck.
There is no lanyard attached or any way to attach a lanyard.
While it reads as fast as old one, it seems to take longer to settle on a final temp.
This is a great example of the old saying, "the enemy of good is better."

Sorry man, those who don't know, don't know.

I thought it was silly to spend more than $15 or $20 on a thermometer too, until I bought one.

I used to do a community fundraiser where I did ~2000 bbq chicken dinners in 3 days. I was constantly sticking birds to monitor their cooking progress and to ensure they were being held to temp. Back then upgrading to a 4s thermo saved me hours of time. If I still did this cook I would pay for 1s in a heartbeat.

That being said, for home users a Lavaworks Javelin would be just fine. Or a Thermoworks Pop.

If the price drops on the Mk iV it would really be considered a best buy as well. I'd love to see ~$50.

I've had one of these for 10 years as a home cook. Earlier this year, I decided to give one of the <$15 Chinese knockoffs on Amazon a try. Exact same reading side by side and it maybe takes 1 more second. It does feel cheaper, but I can buy 7 or 8 for the price of one Thermoworks, and the Chinese one also comes with an external probe that plugs in and a key to open the battery compartment. I would not buy a Thermoworks again.

This brand is considered by many BBQ aficionado's to be the very best. Besides when they come out with a new model this will likely be the cheapest it will ever get.
You are absolutely correct, but I'm wondering why they don't just use a wired probe that stays in the meat the entire cook? Yeah, there's a cord that comes out of the smoker/grill. But you can monitor the temp at all times without opening the lid AND do it via bluetooth on your cellphone, with customizable alerts, to boot. Icing on top of that is it costs 30 bucks.Confused

Leave in probes have their uses, but so does instant read, and they aren't interchangeable with each other (well, unless the leave in probe is equally fast). I don't do BBQ, but I assume the BBQers are maybe sampling temps all around their meat, and probably able to use that information to make specific adjustments (like rotating, basting, adjusting firepower), and otherwise don't really want to monitor a single temp throughout the cook.

I do. And still love my stick thermometer for a number of cuts like brisket for example I can check a gradient if temps through the varying thickness of the meat which I can't do with a static probe. And another thing "they" don't often talk about in low and slow cooking isn't temps per say but the feel of the meat when probed. So you would be probing and feeling for tenderness I use this probing technique on a number of cuts like brisket, butt, and ribs.

I don't know about this one but I bought a thermopop and it was nothing special, totally overrated, and a waste of money.

Bought this Kizen Digital Meat Thermometers for Cooking - Waterproof Instant Read Food Thermometer for Meat, Deep Frying, Baking, Outdoor Cooking, Grilling, & BBQ (Black/White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073KYT...UTF8&psc=1 , for $12.14.. it's $13.99 now with a coupon, but it's a no brainer with 43K reviews.. I don't think I could justify paying $85 for a meat thermometer, but hey.. it's your money
Lots of bad reviews though?

I just had a Thermapen that died after 10 years of moderate use. Got a Thermapop when they were on sale a few weeks ago for $20. The one second readings are nice, but not worth the extra $$$ IMO.
The Thermoworks Pop was on sale for $20? I bought mines two weeks ago at $35.

Is there anything that it didn't live up to? I have a bunch due to its 3-4 second readings, accuracy, smooth entry into meat, durable, easy to clean, long lasting battery, and easy to read temperatures. If it did all that and you're still displeased, the problem isn't with the ThermoPop...

I wasted a bunch of money on Amazon highly rated thermometers that literally died after one cleaning session (not sure if I'm supposed to avoid water on the probe but the Thermopop handles it fine and every other probe died with water) or were just obviously off by at least 10 degrees

I have a thermoworks smoke with 4 probes and the MK4. Both have had issues and I have had them less then 2 years. Company wouldn't help at all, granted they were past the 1 year warranty.
The smoke port holes are finicky so sometimes the probe acts like it not plugged in. The MK4 is off a few degrees on the ice bath test and the boiling water test.

Not really sure how I feel about this company. Not sure if they are just marketed hype, and people just jump on board….I mean I spent over $250 with them, or are they just the same stuff you can get for 75% cheaper.
Ice bath test have to be done exactly right. If you do it wrong it will read 33 or 34 . The Mk4 has a 2 year warranty and the one has a 5 year warranty so if they refused to honor a device past the warranty date you can't hold it against them.

The lanyard thing is such a weird complaint. They have a silicon case attachment you can buy that lets you tie a lanyard to it.

I brought the case for the MK4 after I dropped it from counter height and broke the screen. I like how it has magnets on the back so I can just stick it anywhere for storage.

My Chinese one is like all that have not been calibrated or validated, average 3-10 seconds and accurate to within 5-10 degrees. Good enough is sometimes good enough.
I wonder how you would feel if a chef at a restaurant you ate at had that kind of ridiculous attitude. Sometime good enough is good for food poisoning.

Well, when one of the cheaper Amazon ones someone got me as a gift, pass both the ice bath and boiling water test, and the MK4 failed, it was pretty disappointing. Also, thermoworks would not replace the device due to it not reading accurate temperature. They said it has been professionally calibrated.
These might be nice devices, and I still use mine and my smoke all the time, but I would not buy it again. Company isn't consumer friendly and both my expensive products from them have issues.

I jam the probe in the thickest part of whatever I'm cooking. While the thinner sections will obviously cook quicker, I can't pull the meat until the thicker part is safe to eat. But above all, try not to have one piece of meat with drastically different thicknesses.

Basting goes by look, not temp. Adjusting firepower is measured through an ambient probe or gauge on the smoker. Thermapen isn't measuring that and the probe in the meat would let you know if it needs adjusting. Slow and low doesn't need 1 sec measurements unless you were doing several/many meats at once. 6+ chickens for example.

I use two probes in a brisket, one in the flat and one in the point. Whole chicken just gets jabbed in the breast. Pork butt & ribs rarely vary in thickness enough to matter much.

Thank you both for your points. They're valid. I just never found myself needing a probe like this for low&slow smoking. Steak? Sure. Brisket? Nope. Add in the conveniences an app gives you, timers/alerts/graphs/history/etc and it's just gravy.
