CVS is one of the few places that take PayPal QR codes as payment. It's been recommended to use self checkout, if possible. Once you add the gift card, DO NOT click any payment method on the self checkout terminal. Instead, scan your PayPal QR code like you are buying something. Then it will allow you to checkout and pay with PayPal.
If it does indeed stack with the 2% back at drug stores as the other thread suggests, that's 11% back on up to $1500.

Also can I just use regular checkout and not self checkout?
If you don't understand the 2%, you should go back and see how Flex works.

1% (base reward) + 4% (Paypal) + 4% (top spend category)
The 2% for drugstores is upped to 4%
You must make sure that you spend the most at drugstores in Q4 for you to get the 9%.
Today's $505.95 spent at CVS makes drugstores my top spend category since Walmart where I spent $504.94 isn't eligible.
Please make sure you entered the primary cardmember's last name exactly as it appears on the credit card.
If your name includes a suffix such as Jr., Ill, Esq., etc., please include it in the last name field.
If you've recently changed your address or replaced a lost or stolen card, please enter your previous ZIP Code or your previous card's last 4 digits.
Please try entering your information again or call the number on the back of your card for assistance.
I don't expect my account without the banner to qualify.

As an example, I set up PayPal Key so that I can use Paypal pretty much any where online and it will be counted as a PayPal transaction but using my Chase Freedom Flex.
As another example, I will easily spend $1,500 in restaurants/gas stations, etc. over the next 3 months.
So in summary, for me it doesn't matter if I combine the two to earn 10% with one transaction rather than two transactions that earn 5% and 5%.

However, I think there is still an advantage to maximizing the 9% with VISA gift cards.
Although it is more like 8% after the fee.
It is an opportunity that does not come around often.
My gas for the rest of the year is covered by Amex 3% offer which is on top of the 2% base on gas.
The Citi Custom Cash can be used for groceries at 5% of $500 per month.
Restaurants are not a huge expense for me.

I have the offer that gives me 3% on gas as a statement credit until Dec. 31, 2021.
Amex offers are similar to BoA offers and Chase offers.
I buy VISA gift cards to pay for other things that are not groceries, gas, or cable+internet/

If you apply for Flex now, it is almost certain there will be a grocery category in 2022.
That will stack and give you 9%.
Make sure that when you apply that the terms are 5% for grocery for the first year.
I have read that Chase is offering different sign-on terms.
