I got 3 of these a few months back for the same price. All of them Seagate BarraCuda Computes. Slow as hell when you get close to filling them up since they're SMR.

Anyone know what kind of drive is inside?
edit: looks like they are smr drives. need to see how they will work with unRAID.
not recommended for raid configurations.

When you said they are slow when you get close to filling them up what do you consider to be close? I have some 8tb Seagate drive and I think they're kind of slow but maybe I have them too full

Ignorance is still bliss for some I see... I've had one of these for probably almost 8 years now, still performs great, speed is fine, idk what you're comparing it to, or doing with one to where you need ssd level speeds🙄, and you show me an 8tb portable, then if one does release, show me it at 120 or close... you clearly put in your 2 cents on credit, without the 2 cents to back up in reality.

Pretty much the same here, only Seagate drive I had fail was a 1.5TB drive in an enclosure and one of their laptop drives (believe that was 120GB). I've had double that number fail from the WD brand and haven't bought too many of them over the years (maybe around 10 or so).

Extremely easy to shuck. Even potential to close them back up after shucking (Might have a few plastic case clips busted though).

These were/are really solid as Chia drives to store and farm plots on back when they went on sale during the early spring harddrive hype.

Same here, after using about 8 or more 8-10tb Seagates, only an 8tb WD Elements expired in less than 6 months, this was on a 2020 version of WD Elements. The others have been going strong for as long as 4 years. I used them for a Plex server and will be using the last 4 I got for a arcade box Launchbox\Hyperspin setup

Prices on hard drives used to go down dramatically every year as technology advanced. For the last 5 or so years they have remained the same. I bought an 8TB drive for the same price several years ago.

I have five of these drives. I paid the same price for them at Costco in May. They are fine for archiving files or for write-once read-many applications. But the SMR Barracuda Compute drive that they contain is not suitable to use in a raid or as a primary drive. The built-in two-port hub actually works pretty well and has come in handy. If you want a better performing drive, move up to a 10TB+ Seagate or 8TB+ Western Digital which will be CRM.
