I got 3 of these a few months back for the same price. All of them Seagate BarraCuda Computes. Slow as hell when you get close to filling them up since they're SMR.

Awesome. Been waiting for $15/tb.

Anyone know what kind of drive is inside?
edit: looks like they are smr drives. need to see how they will work with unRAID.
not recommended for raid configurations.

That's actually not a bad price after the discount is applied but over the yrs, my data retention efforts have compounded ten fold and an 8TB drive wont cut it for me for high capacity storage unfortunately, but if I can get deals on 10TB+ drives then I'll be over those all day long.

link for the WD deal?
The one from newegg was expired. Just search "newegg hard drive 12TB" on slickdeal. The comments and discussions there are still very helpful.

The new post is from BestBuy, same price, same product, even better BF price guarantee policy, just search it.

[Added] @creedyB OMG, I just noticed the new deal from BB is the same price but for 14TB one. Grab it if you need!!! Link:

Anyone know how to check if a drive is SMR kr CMR? I'm curious because I have several shucked drives that I use in Raid10. It's functioning just fine for over 3 yrs now but out of curiosity I want to check the drives.
It's hardware raid10 on dell h730 card
According to my research several days ago, no easy way to test.

If the manufacturer publishes a list of SMR drivers, and yours are on it, then definitely they are SMR. But the list is not exhaustive. If yours are not on the list, it doesn't mean it is CMR.

About testing, usually it involves carefully monitoring the writing speed while overloading the cache deliberately. Or, rewrite the same location of the drive and monitor the speed. But these tests may fail if TRIM is used or filesystem like ZFS is used. Anyway, tests are complicated and there is no guarantee for CMR.

Some also claim it can be determined from the storage density listed in manufacturer specifications. But it was a great burden to me to check and decypher those information...

It seems many people agree that high-end drivers with >10TB capacity are CMR; while those with [3.5in, >1TB per disk, usually 2T, 4T, 8T], or [2.5in, >0.5T per disk, usually 1T, 2T, 4T], are very much likely to be SMR.

Anyway, SMR is not devil, it can be quartered by a well backup manner. For me, I just want to save some hassle, so $200 for 12TB CMR is still an appealing deal to me.

Make sure recycle your old drive. They'll print you a 15% coupon. Only use for SD/WD hard drives or SSD's. I bought the 14tb one yesterday at $169.99 with coupon.

I've had way more WD drives fail on me than Seagate.

I'm amazed at how hard drives have finally broken the hard drive version of Moore's Law. I bought this drive 3-4 years ago for basically the exact same price. Is this because of the pandemic or other manufacturing and supply chain issues, because hard drive technology has basically exhausted all practical, reliable and affordable ways of increasing storage density, or because people have been shifting to SSDs and streaming and the "cloud" lessen the need for massive cheap local storage?

For myself, other than replacing a failed hard drive, I don't see buying one ever again. Btw, this drive did fail on me a while back, so I disconnected it and haven't used it since as it didn't store critical data. Haven't gotten around to seeing if it permanently failed or just flaked out on me.

I have a lot of pictures of my kid and family over the years...I just use Copy/Paste from the phone or camcorder to the portable drive I have now...is that how you guy call "back up" ? The iPhone back up is different, when I plug into the computer it's like copy everything that is new on the source over automatically...I don't have to copy Paste (not that it let me. Itunes do this automatically). But for the photos from other sources, mostly from multiple Android phones, Sony camcorder...I can just copy/paste.
Thank you. I'm not a tech savvy.

Same here... have bought several of these and they can be SLOW!!!

Might be OK for backup drives though.... if you are patient.

By going to Device Manager and then 'Disk drives', then 'Policies' for the drive, you can speed it up a bit by choosing the better performance options.

Got to call BS.

You should not have thrown out a defective hard drive. Who would just trash a drive that could easily be RMAd or returned to Costco?
They have a 2-yr warranty. which gets extended from Costco and further extended if you used their Citicard. If you are serious, you did it wrong. Life has no guarantees, but warranties are there just in case.
Costco has the best return policy and Seagate gives 2-year data recovery services included with this Costco purchase to attempt to recover your data.
Yes mr smart a - I will send HD full of my personal files to Seagate in Malaysia. Costco has only 90 days return on electronics.Just learn before posting nonsense

External hard drives don't fall under the 90 day limit, FYI.
