I got 3 of these a few months back for the same price. All of them Seagate BarraCuda Computes. Slow as hell when you get close to filling them up since they're SMR.

Awesome. Been waiting for $15/tb.

Anyone know what kind of drive is inside?
edit: looks like they are smr drives. need to see how they will work with unRAID.
not recommended for raid configurations.

Have five of these plugged into a motherboard configured as a parity raid 5 storage pool on Windows 10. To avoid slow I/O use in PowerShell the New-VirtualDisk command's options for 5 columns with interleave size of 16K, then 64kb NTFS allocation unit size. Fast, fault-tolerant Plex server with no problems now 1 year.

Prices on hard drives used to go down dramatically every year as technology advanced. For the last 5 or so years they have remained the same. I bought an 8TB drive for the same price several years ago.
If you did pay that much then you probably got ripped off. 8tb drives were hovering around $100 a few years back when on sale. Think I got a couple around $90ish back when ebay used to have coupons.

Extremely easy to shuck. Even potential to close them back up after shucking (Might have a few plastic case clips busted though).

These were/are really solid as Chia drives to store and farm plots on back when they went on sale during the early spring harddrive hype.
I have 25 of them in my Chia farm, no problems so far

I've got about 10 of these. Bought them about 2 a year for the last 4 or 5 years. No failures. I've had one WD fail (out of about 20 drives in the last 8 or 9 years). At this point, it's mostly just luck.

My WDs were much faster. I found out that Seagates, by default, turn off write caching on externals. If you want to boost speed, you can turn them back on. After I turned on write caching, speeds are comparable to WDs but I haven't done any in depth testing.

The HUB feature is really worthwhile but I have had several of those fail.

No. Expect about 30% failure rate within the first few months

Nope. I bought 2 of these last December from Costco and I've already had both fail on me. One I was able to recover, but the other had to go straight into the trash.

How hard are these to shuck? I could use more drives for a low utilization backup server.
Thanks
Easy peasy. Youtube it. Save the enclosure in case you need to reinstall for any warranty RMA. Make a note of which HDD's serial number goes with which enclosure, as they do not match, but I read somewhere that Seagate may be able to match them? Better safe than sorry. I put a note on the box.

Got to call BS.

You should not have thrown out a defective hard drive. Who would just trash a drive that could easily be RMAd or returned to Costco?
They have a 2-yr warranty. which gets extended from Costco and further extended if you used their Citicard. If you are serious, you did it wrong. Life has no guarantees, but warranties are there just in case.
Costco has the best return policy and Seagate gives 2-year data recovery services included with this Costco purchase to attempt to recover your data.

Stop spreading FUD. Maybe this is your anecdotal stats, which are on a minuscule scale.

@madshakes, don't sweat it. This has a 2-yr warranty and Costco has easy returns if that happens.

So do I need to go in store or can I buy online? Never bought from Costco before but this price seems damn good°°°°°°°
You will need to be a member to get this deal. You could get them online for the sale price as stated, but also as stated, they may have a shipping charge. Not certain until the price drops. I am betting there will be a shipping charge.
