I got 3 of these a few months back for the same price. All of them Seagate BarraCuda Computes. Slow as hell when you get close to filling them up since they're SMR.

Awesome. Been waiting for $15/tb.

Anyone know what kind of drive is inside?
edit: looks like they are smr drives. need to see how they will work with unRAID.
not recommended for raid configurations.

Ignorance is still bliss for some I see... I've had one of these for probably almost 8 years now, still performs great, speed is fine, idk what you're comparing it to, or doing with one to where you need ssd level speeds🙄, and you show me an 8tb portable, then if one does release, show me it at 120 or close... you clearly put in your 2 cents on credit, without the 2 cents to back up in reality.
People connect the usb 3 drive to a usb 2.0 port and complain about speed, and some don't have the proper drives so the usb 3 falls back as usb 2.0… that's usually the issue with speed.
Other issue with speed is when copying lots of small files, you won't get the full 120 MB/s with small files. That rating is for large files copied without interruption

Grabbed one last yesterday, preparing the price adjust in case it immediately sold out on 11/15, since I only see very few piles in the store.

But this Costco Seagate 8TB one is SMR.

Then after doing more research and learning about SMR v.s. CMR, I decide to return this one and go for the $199.99 WD 12T CMR one from newegg. It worths the more price in my opinion. I use it for private home NAS backup holding photos and documents. It can last for many many years with careful usage.
For a simple example, always getting a new one for backup and then shift out the old ones when some SMART warning was detected. Therefore, you always get a reliable backup.

is this good for storing family photos and videos? compare to other drives like SSD and such?
Perfect use case.*

*Remember anything important should have a backup copy. So store a backup on another drive too. There is no such thing as a guarantee that any drive can be trusted 100%. A warranty does not guarantee the drive can't fail.
Backup your backup offsite (such as in the cloud) also, if you want to be super-safe.

I bought one about this time last year. It started to lose data after 6 months. I did a scan and found tens of thousands bad tracks. The only good thing is that I was able to return it with full refund

Who are planning to loose your data upon? I don't want yours I have plenty already Wink

ALL data storage methods ===> BACKUP YOUR DATA because they will all fail someday you may be are unaware of until it's too late.
If you back it up, you only lose one copy.

Decide for yourself how reliable Seagate (or other) drives are from a published source:

https://www.backblaze.com/b2/hard...-data.html

Now, this item is in external drive so you can't directly correlate the drive models without cracking a case, but I find these reports an unbiased data point. The problem with personal anecdotes is that it's very difficult to gauge the failure rate. Many people will post about their failure stories, few post about purchases without a problem.

I'm not an expert, but I strongly believe it is not about Seagate or any particularly brand, while more a matter of the SMR or CMR used. Sadly they won't reveal all the details.

No one is saying you dont do backups. But if you are doing that Backup on a Seagate, you are pretty much without a backup to begin with.

Pivoting to a double down? LMAO
Both your first post, and this are fear-mongering false claims. Show me evidence to backup your claim that these drives have a high failure rate or just stop. Sorry you must have had some issues, but it can happen with any drive and with statistically similar failure rates other than certain models- of which these are not.

None of my SGT 8TB drives have failed, but that doesn't stop me from backing up. Fear of data loss solved, and warranty in case they fail prematurely. Plus with this deal, easy returns for Costco. It doesn't get any better than this. Move along.

Are you still crying about Deathstar drives when you see a Hitachi deal?

Anyone know how to check if a drive is SMR kr CMR? I'm curious because I have several shucked drives that I use in Raid10. It's functioning just fine for over 3 yrs now but out of curiosity I want to check the drives.
It's hardware raid10 on dell h730 card

Well that is good to know, after the fact.
You gave no such indication of being light-hearted. Reads like you are doubling down. Read up on Poe's Law. Fooled me because I only had your first comment to go with it. It just looks like more brand-bashing insanity. Thanks for your threadcrap.
