I have bought several of these SMR drives and they can be SLOW!!! This might be OK for backup drives though.... if you are patient. By going to Device Manager and then 'Disk drives', then 'Policies' for the drive, you can speed it up a bit by choosing the better performance options. -TidalWaveOne

Buy it after you know what exactly SMR is and decide to take the risk. SMR doesn't only mean slow speed, it can also lose data if not taken care of, for example abrupting the writing process while you think it has stopped working.

Got to call BS.
You should not have thrown out a defective hard drive. Who would just trash a drive that could easily be RMAd or returned to Costco?
They have a 2-yr warranty. which gets extended from Costco and further extended if you used their Citicard. If you are serious, you did it wrong. Life has no guarantees, but warranties are there just in case.
Costco has the best return policy and Seagate gives 2-year data recovery services included with this Costco purchase to attempt to recover your data.
I thought Costco only allowed 30 days to return electronics.
So let's say I use this drive for 6 months and then it dies, will Costco do anything since it's out of return period?
The best part? Seatools test report it as PASS, even though every other program gave it a hard fail.

See their return policy on their site.

My only point for you was any return of this much cost (Normally $169.99 lately) even at $119.99 is well worth the return to Costco or to ship to SGT for repair/replacement under warranty. You already spent that time, so return it and salvage your money spent out of pocket at least. Half working still qualifies for a return as well as fully working with Costco.
I know well how frustrating hardware can be to diagnose. My background is not in IT directly, but I have built several PCs and had to troubleshoot some. Also, I have dealt with some software issues over the years like anyone who doesn't want to get ripped off by some Bestbuy clowns or the like.
I've been an MS certified OEM builder (not that that makes me feel special).
The hassle factor of returning does not exceed the cost when it is so simple to get it resolved. No one needs an IT background to understand you don't throw away this much money. And as an IT pro, you know half working is not working despite passing tests.
And this
Multiple comments you made about throwing it away and returns not being worthwhile. Stop changing the topic.

My point is there is no logical reason justifying wasting your money. The hassle factor does not exceed the cost when it is so simple to get it resolved. No one needs an IT background to understand you don't literally throw away this much money. So if you were telling the truth, your temper tantrum made you do it. Either way, bad idea.
Who said anything about throwing away a HDD?
I said it is not worth it to mess with a drive that I know have a extremely high chance of failure. 4 days of wasted time is worth many times more $ than the price of the drive. How do I get my money back on my time from costco? Sure they'll refund you $120 on the HDD, but what about the time I spent on the bad drive? Are they refunding that too?

I am also talking about you insofar as after your wasted time, it is still your logical move to return it to Costco. That would be better than having SGT inspect it, being an intermittent issue. Costco will take it back regardless of whether it works or not or how many hours are on it. Of course, you can not get back your time or be compensated for it unless you were diagnosing one for a client. My post has nothing to do with that. You just move on and return the drive you don't trust if purchased from Costco. If not, make a backup and send it in to SGT on an RMA for inspection so it is at least on the record as an issue.
I did work for 13 years in tech repair-related jobs and I know the hardest thing to diagnose sometimes are intermittent issues.
I am not affiliated with SGT. Why ask me that? Did I ask you if you work for their competition? Spouting off ludicrous statements as statistical advice not to buy this.
I do get sick of anecdotal results being spread in these threads as if they were true expectations and statistics like they are a significant source to rely on. Case in point: You stated that others should expect around a 30% failure rate within the first few months when someone asks how reliable they are.
I have had good anecdotal results as I mentioned in other posts with this brand, but I do not think they are better or worse than other brands as far as this model goes. Please cite some larger-scale stats than your experience if you want to make that claim. Otherwise, phrase it as your own experience and quantify it.
