I have bought several of these SMR drives and they can be SLOW!!! This might be OK for backup drives though.... if you are patient. By going to Device Manager and then 'Disk drives', then 'Policies' for the drive, you can speed it up a bit by choosing the better performance options. -TidalWaveOne

Buy it after you know what exactly SMR is and decide to take the risk. SMR doesn't only mean slow speed, it can also lose data if not taken care of, for example abrupting the writing process while you think it has stopped working.

I ship a lot from Costco because I only get to go there a few times a year as closest ones are 45 and 55 min away with no traffic
I think seagate tried to get around their HD problems by calling them backup drives. This implies that drive is not designed for everyday usage and just the occasional backup.

@madshakes, don't sweat it. This has a 2-yr warranty and Costco has easy returns if that happens.
trying to recover the data or complete loss
time testing the half failed drive
i wasted 4 days b/c of a half dying seagate drive.

Since I am a regular there, I know better. Maybe it is a long trip for you personally, or you can only go when they are really busy. Those factors can make it a personal hassle for you but so far you've given no reasonable excuse to waste this much money when it is as easy as pie to do a Costco return. Throwing away this much money is ludicrous.
The 4 days you used are already gone by then. Maybe you just took such satisfaction in trashing it that for you it was cathartic. Like the fax machine bashing in "Office Space". That is still cutting off your nose to spite your face. It is not any true slick dealer's perspective at all.
An RMA to Seagate does require an RMA request and may not be so simple since you need to ship it out to them and wait. I'd opt for Costco return every time and deal with restoring from my backup of the data over shipping and hoping for a successful data recovery attempt from them.

The best part? Seatools test report it as PASS, even though every other program gave it a hard fail.
