I've setup multiple fire tablets with google play this year. A quick google will show you step by step instructions. Maybe it was harder in the past but now it's super easy. Download and install 4 files in a specific order and takes less than 15 minutes.

Sounds like it can be a bit of a pain, but possible. That thread contains a link to another more in-depth discussion of the process. However, someone also mentioned that method may not work on some newer chips.

Note that if you use the Fire Toolbox with the suggested default option to debloat this thing, it removes the built-in photo viewer. If you then snap a pic with the camera and try to view it with the in-camera review button, it will give an error that "photos are blocked" and tell you to edit the parental controls. But it's not actually related to those settings. You just need to put the Amazon-based "Photos" app back. (You can click "advanced" under the "Amazon apps" menu of Fire Toolbox and then check it's box to reinstall if you want to get rid of that error.)

I will second this. The Fire HD 10 is quite nice, great screen, and everything fully adequate, and you can get it on sale quite often for $80-100. The 8" tablet is just too slow, screen kind of lackluster, no compelling reason to use it. Maybe you want 8" form factor to read? Then get a kindle. Love my Fire HD 10 though for flying and watching shows. Transatlantic flights zip by when binge watching. Also not that difficult to install google play store.

A factory reset should do it. Pull up from the bottom and search for "settings" then open it and go to "device options" and "reset to factory defaults".
