12-point sockets on manual tool sets are better than 6-point sockets in almost ALL use cases, especially for non-ratcheting wrenches. With more points, it's way easier to position and engage fasteners in hard to reach areas (which is likely going to be a lot of the time when doing mechanic work).
For impact or pneumatic tools, sure, a 6-point makes sense since it provides more precise contact and reduces the risk of rounding off the fastener, but that's not what this set is for.
There's also nothing stopping you from getting both types if it really matters to you that much... no one said you had to get one or the other, so no need to TC.
Everything said, this is a great deal for those looking for a relatively complete manual toolset for home mechanics. From personal experience, the 8, 10, and 13 mm sockets will cover 90% of your needs. 😉

what you're looking for is perhaps gal gadots Instagram stream.. 😉
- Incomplete, skip lots of socket sizes or offer only a short range or no overlap between 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives (or worse, only 2 out of the 3).
- Don't offer the smaller or largest sizes
- Usually 12 point, maybe a mix with some 6.
- Use lots of hex bits to increase the tool count
- The cases usually fall apart and don't stay closed according to reviews.
The one set that gets past most of this is the Harbor Freight 301 piece set. It includes a full range of sizes for 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" in 12 and 6 point with plenty of adapters if you need to get in tight spots. It does include a lot of bits, but actually useful ones - like e-torx. The case is excellent and way more portable than those tool-box style cases with the other sets. My only real complaint is the assortment of cheap wrenches, which are pretty pathetic in count and quality. The HF set usually goes on sale for BF. I picked mine up for about $160 last year and it has more than paid for itself with how many jams it's gotten me out of this year because of the complete assortment inside.
