I'm not a pro mechanic by any means, but I do regular work on my own cars and motorcycles and here's my two cents:

12-point sockets on manual tool sets are better than 6-point sockets in almost ALL use cases, especially for non-ratcheting wrenches. With more points, it's way easier to position and engage fasteners in hard to reach areas (which is likely going to be a lot of the time when doing mechanic work).

For impact or pneumatic tools, sure, a 6-point makes sense since it provides more precise contact and reduces the risk of rounding off the fastener, but that's not what this set is for.

There's also nothing stopping you from getting both types if it really matters to you that much... no one said you had to get one or the other, so no need to TC.

Everything said, this is a great deal for those looking for a relatively complete manual toolset for home mechanics. From personal experience, the 8, 10, and 13 mm sockets will cover 90% of your needs. 😉

Same set with a box is available for the same price. Just an FYI.

Why do some people even comment, if they just personally don't care for the item? Is it just to argue, or are they lonely & crave attention? The, "I don't like it, so it's a lousy deal" gets old.
I prefer 6 pt sockets, but there are times when a 12pt is needed, or just works better. Same thing with wrenches.

12 point sockets lul. Fluff.
How often have you had a problem with 12 point sockets? I'm guessing never unless you're a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic where you're using a ton of torque. 12 point sockets are fine for the home DIYer.

Sounds like you've never had to deal with rusty fasteners.

It's much more common to have an issue with 12pt sockets rounding off bolts than to be in a situation to actually need the 12pt. You can also get away with fewer 6pt sockets than 12pt in those odd bolt size situations.

That's an incorrect assumption. There's this stuff called penetrating oil. And then there's using the right tool for the job. Sometimes you should use 6-point sockets, but it's usually not necessary in most cases. You have to be smarter than the tools.

I agree 100%, but 12-point sockets work completely fine in most situations.

They're both the same. From what I've heard the box is pretty cheaply made. So I would opt for the trays

The issue is the 101 pieces which are mainly bits and Allen keys. So in reality it's a 169 piece tool set.

The problem with most of these sets is they're:

- Incomplete, skip lots of socket sizes or offer only a short range or no overlap between 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives (or worse, only 2 out of the 3).
- Don't offer the smaller or largest sizes
- Usually 12 point, maybe a mix with some 6.
- Use lots of hex bits to increase the tool count
- The cases usually fall apart and don't stay closed according to reviews.

The one set that gets past most of this is the Harbor Freight 301 piece set. It includes a full range of sizes for 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" in 12 and 6 point with plenty of adapters if you need to get in tight spots. It does include a lot of bits, but actually useful ones - like e-torx. The case is excellent and way more portable than those tool-box style cases with the other sets. My only real complaint is the assortment of cheap wrenches, which are pretty pathetic in count and quality. The HF set usually goes on sale for BF. I picked mine up for about $160 last year and it has more than paid for itself with how many jams it's gotten me out of this year because of the complete assortment inside.

This is a good comment and very true so I don't know why it would have been downvoted.
