HVAC technician told me to stick with MERV 8-11. Anything above that provides too much resistance and can lead to problems.

I worked on HVAC systems for 15 years, this is not even remotely true. Higher MERV ratings do not stop air flow, they stop fine particles like pollen, dust, and pet dander. Modern HVAC systems work fine with high MERV ratings. The issue with any filter regardless of rating is when they become dirty - this is when it can put strain on a system.

The above link seems to say that you can, but you'll need to change it more often and it will put more stress on your system (due to less filter surface area)... so it's best to stick with 4" if you ask me... even though you might be able to get away with using a 1" filter... but don't use multiple 1" filters at the same time.

These at Amazon that I use are currently $16 per filter. I bought my last set back in February of 2020 when they cost under $11 each.

Been using 1" in my furnace for 15 years. It is supposed to take 4" ones. I change them every 2 months.
