I lived off of a d link di blue/gray old ass router for over a decade that I purchased for 50 bucks. "Zero" issues. I had no need to ever spend money on a router of any type , mesh or otherwise, costing triple digits.
Same router, I used in my 1200 sq ft apartment and it always had issues...I swore prior to my home purchase that I would shell out a bazillion dollars for the baddest router on the market. Never did it.
Then I bought in on the Linksys velop 19.99 deal... Found a local Walmart that had 10 available, bought 6 of them (totally "unnecessary").
This mesh system is also aged, currently still using it. Also "zero" issues.
But, the performance difference in terms of connected speeds, even isolated and easily dismissed issues is night and day. Speed, range, minor connectivity issues, all 100% better with the mesh system.
Do I need or care to buy the deco m9? Absolutely not. But I'm also certain that If did, I would see a similar improvement in performance/range etc.
I guess my point is size of home, speeds, range, location, individual needs, interference from nearby etc... All of it matters and is relevant, not just one thing. Do you need 800mbps in the back corner of my basement? Maybe. Maybe not.
Note that the overall performance of the mesh may degrade with more units, so don't use more than you need.
the third band is great if you have lots of wifi devices communicating at the same time.
dual band is more than enough for 99% of the households

Mesh routers need to communicate with each other. If they're dual band (2.4GHz + 5GHz), they will use half the 5GHz channel's bandwidth to talk to the main node and the other half for your internet. If they're tri band (2.4GHz + 5GHz + 5GHz), it will dedicate one of the two 5Ghz channels to talking back to the main node, leaving the other one with full bandwidth still.
If you're able to wire them all together with ethernet, then a dual band node doesn't have to use half its 5Gz channel to do that.
Yes you can I did it with 2 sets I bought from Costco on previous Deals
(1) When would it be better to use these as APs rather than as the primary router? Is the use case as APs good only when it is imperative to use a conventional router as your primary router?
(2) Any performance degradation when used as APs?
Assume there is no ethernet backhaul.

Performance should be the same either in AP or regular mode.

Someone mentioned you could use it as AP which is what you're looking to do. So yes
Also note this is triband, so it uses the third band for communication with in the router specially useful for those who do not have ethernet backbone for the mesh.
