HP
hi, i have dealt with this since i bought it. it is windows 10 pro. i erased the default install when i bought it from hp direct. since reboots take only about 35 sec, i never really sought help.
over the years i might go 3 months w/o using the laptop so i have lived with it too.
but i could be doing work and suddenly the touchpad and screen both dont work. have to plug in a mouse.
rather annoying.
i have disabled and re-enabled in device mgr, the human interface drivers, i have also checked the windows touchpad left to right toggle, and it is still on when this problem hits.

If you're sufficiently motivated you may be able to figure out a means of restarting the offending software / service without rebooting.
1) What's the actual model?
2) Within the BIOS they have onboard diagnostic which should be able to determine what's going on.
3) HP's website usually make it fairly easy to get the needed drivers automatically
4) within Windows you have the event viewer which allows you to determine what or any system issues occurred.
5) The inactivity of the laptop usually means if you do turn it on the first thing it's going to do is to try to check in with Microsoft to get the latest updates.
6) do a system scan with Malwarebytes
