CVS Info:

First of all, you will need a CVS ExtraCare card. This is obtained easily at any store at the register. Some will ask you to fill out the form then and there, others will just give you the card and ask you to return the form later.

Once you have the card, you can now start CVSing

The biggest thing to understand is that CVS uses a promotional program called "ExtraCare Bucks" (commonly abbreviated as ECBs.) These print out on your receipt immediately once you purchase an item offering them; almost like an instant-rebate you get at the register. You can turn around and use them anytime on almost anything in the store, except for alcohol, cigarettes, and gift cards.

Often, CVS advertises items as "Free after ECB" – For example, throughout the month of November, CVS has Crest Pro Health Whitening Toothpaste in 4.2 oz size, for free after ECB. The cost is $3.49, but you get $3.49 back instantly on your receipt. The best part is that there are often coupons available that can actually help you earn money… like for the above toothpaste, there are $1 off coupons available, meaning the item would be $2.49, but you get $3.49 in ECBs back. The limit on this toothpaste for this month is 2. So if you wanted to start off small to get into CVSing, the thing to do would be to buy one toothpaste in the first transaction (and use a coupon if you have one, so that you either pay $3.49 or $2.49 in cash), then use the $3.49 ECBs you get back from that first transaction to pay for the second tube of toothpaste, and again, receive $3.49 more in ECBs.

The trick now is to roll your ECBs so that you rarely pay more than maybe a dollar or two in tax on transactions, instead using your ECBs from previous transactions… then earning more to keep doing the same. It's a cycle (and a game/addiction to some, lol.)

BT's kindergarten teacher called while we were out getting a haircut for DH and lunch for all of us. Bummed I missed it, because I wanted to ask her a question about labeling the school supplies... but it's nice to have a name. I have met her, too! She was on LT's eval team when we were trying to get school-sponsored speech for him. I kind of think she remembered our name and picked BT based on that. We're obviously concerned parents who will be involved in the process, ya know? Anyway - exciting stuff! We get to visit the classroom Thursday.

I called my local School Board, and the cut off for going top school in a year, is August 31st. Since DD is born in November, that means she will be attending Pre School at age 5, and Kindergarten at age 6.

However, I have been looking at the fact they have to take a test, and well, my daughter is not quite 3, and she already knows her letters, numbers, shapes, money, colors, her name, her age, and some Spanish words. ( last night we were counting, and she went one, two, three, four, cinco, six, seven, eight, Neuve, ten.)

I am thrilled that my boys will be nearly 6 when they start kindergarten. I hated being the youngest one in my class - I am a May baby. They have to have a cutoff, and sometimes it feels like it's not fair. The test is more to sort the kids into appropriate classes with a good mix of kids, it's not an entrance exam. hug Our schools don't do a test at all. They just sort and go and shuffle kids as needed once the school year starts.

TSNC - keep in mind just because you think your child is ready for K from an academic standpoint you need to factor in the emotional aspect. Maturity. I went to K when I was 4 and turned 5 at the end of Sept. I know I will be sending LJ when he is 6. I worked in a private school where the cutoff was Oct 1 and although it is better to see a kid repeat K as opposed to a higher grade many of our repeats could have been avoided if the parents would have waited.

Also, today's Pre-S is much like K when we were kids. K is now more like 1st grade. Kids are reading on their own by 2nd semester K.

As a parent and someone who has worked in a school, I would suggest not pushing it. There is the age cutoff for a reason.

Oh and I was way too young to head off to college at 17!!

That's huge for me. I'm much happier thinking about sending a 19 yr old off to college.

Christian's birthday was right before the cutoff here so I went ahead and sent him to K last year with the knowledge it might just be a practice year (lol) which it was. This year he's repeating it and I think will do really well. They don't have pre-k here except for ESL kids or special needs kids (or if you want to go to a private place and pay, which we haven't been able to afford)...so that year was kinda like his pre-k. The teacher also told me that the K teachers all went to some conference in Alabama this year during the summer because the curiculum is going to be even harder than it was before.

He knew all the basics while he was young too...colors, numbers, letters, name, address, phone, etc but like someone else said..they're having to read and do a LOT more by the second semester in K than they did when we were kids. I mean heck, we didn't even begin tackle reading until first grade when I was a kid.

Same here! Plus...I couldn't even drive until my Jr year in high school and by then most of my friends were driving. (Course I didn't get my license until I was 19 I think but still..had I WANTED to drive...I wouldn't have been able to, lol).

I am still debating what to do. I might just send her to Kindergarten at age 6, like her birthday requires, and try and socialize her and home school her to a good level.

I'm a stay at home mom, with no other kids right now, so i can afford the time to teach her, so she'll be up to standard and be more of a social being.

well, i was thinking about getting her the Pre School from a local church, but it costs money, and she would be going at age 5, and i;m sorta thinking, Meh, keep her home, have lots of playdates, etc. Send her to Kindergarten at age 6. I just don't know. If my local school district has free pre k, I might send her to Preschool. I don't know, it's just so confusing!

That's rough, we went through the same thing. No free pre-k here unless we paid for it and we couldn't afford that. If he hadn't just met the cutoff for entering kindergarten I would have probably done what you are saying...kept him home, playdates, played school, etc. When I was a kid most schools had pre-k for free...it was just part of the school. My brother and I both went to it so I was surprised when my daughter got to be about that age that they don't offer it to just anyone anymore.

i didn't feel like cooking. we went to the bahrain national museum (really tiny, 6 exhibits, most on the burial rituals of the ancient people and then ancient trade) and then to lunch. lots of being out in the 115+ weather.

we stopped by this place which is supposed to have nice meats to check it out. their beef is kobe and black angus, 32 and 18 dinar per kilo (dinar ~ 2.7 usd). totally not worth + i don't know how to cook kobe beef. upstairs was pork though so i asked to get some pork chops we can make later on. later on = tonight. oh well. suckers are brining right now. they're not thick enough to stuff so i'll just layer on some prosciutto like ham and provolone on top and let that melt up all nice over it. served wtih some roasted grapes and a toasted orzo pasta.
