This was a hot deal a few months ago at $850. It is now $100 less!
Deal is live as of midnight pst on 11/1.

Intel Core i5 1135G7 (latest gen cpu)
16GB LPDDR4X 4266MHz memory
512GB nvme storage
1080p IPS 15.6" display
Wifi6
Thunderbolt 3
Webcam
Fingerprint scanner
Weight: 2.47lbs
For 2021, LG gram comes in 14, 16, and 17" variants. Shortly after the new line up was introduced, LG decided to add last year's model with current gen processor and memory upgrade so they introduced this model.
It doesn't have some of the 2021's line of features but is much cheaper.
Here are the missing features I care about
:
1) 16" size with WQXGA screen (higher resolution).
2) a slightly brighter screen with 16:10 ratio
3) Thunderbolt 4 ports (vs 3)
4) Better color on keyboard (dark grey with orange text is not a popular combo). Plus dark grey looks a bit cheaper than the new colors on the 16".
5) Newer wifi modem (I believe)
Despite all that, at almost half the price of the comparable 16" version, this is a great deal in my book.
It's backorder but they'll ship pretty soon.
I believe this is the model on LG's website

I'm upgrading from a 13.3" HP envy. It's a premium laptop but I'm tired of the small screen. This lg gram gives me much more power, more storage, a bigger screen, and actually less weight.

Acer had a 2.2lbs 15.6" Swift 5 a couple of years ago, but they are now limited to 14".
The only competition I can think of is the just announced Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 15.6" OLED, which is even lighter than the LG Gram at 2.31lbs, but has a smaller 63Wh battery and costs $1300 for the i7 version. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1663995-REG/samsung_np950xdb_ke5us_galaxy_book_pro_i7_1165g7.... Other than that, you are pretty much looking at 14" ultra light laptops, and there are a lot of options in that screen size.
For me, the biggest drawback of this laptop is the ultra glossy screen. Looks like LG didn't apply any anti-reflective coating to the glossy screen, so this is one of the glossiest displays out there. Shouldn't be an issue in environments where you can control the light, but would be a big no if you work in bright environments. I looked into applying a matte screen protector, but it is almost impossible to install those without getting a few ugly bubbles under the film.
Can't beat this price if you are in the market for exactly what this laptop offers, but for most users, they will be better off with a slightly heftier laptop that doesn't have so many compromises. If you are okay with a 14" display, there are so many great options out there at are both light and insanely powerful (all the way up to Ryzen 9 5900HX).
Also, this is an 11th Gen i5 so it's pretty good.

Yet this is a discount? The Samsung Galaxy book line overall is 'famous' for its frequent discounts and sales, it'll easily go for 1K flat or less. Either way this is still a decent deal
Anything under 3.1 lbs is good enough for my needs. I use my laptop when traveling and my 13.3 hp envy has been ggreat. However its screen is a bit too small for any decent amount of work. I actually prefer glossy screen as content look better on them (if you can control glare).
What other options under $1000 do you recommend?
Galaxy book pro at $850 (old deal) was pretty good but 8gb ram kills it. Need 16gb and 512gb ssd. Hrmm...maybe BF deal with 16gb coming? Gonna hold onto my gram til then.
