These Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players are the best ones because they have built in HDR Tone Mapping and HDR Optimizer. No other Blu-ray players available have this, not even the game consoles.

If your TV (or projector) does not support Dolby Vision, get the 420.

I'd your TV does support Dolby Vision, get the 820.

Note, Dolby Vision content will bypass the Tone Mapping & Optimizer.

Streaming interface isn't great with these. Get a Roku or Apple TV for that.

I use the 420 with my projector. It is fantastic.

How's it compare to this deal?
https://slickdeals.net/f/15334465-sony-ubp-x700-4k-ultra-hd-home-theater-streaming-blu-ray-player-with-high-resolution-audio-and-wi-fi-149-99

I went with open-box at BB for this one at ~$112, but not sure if I'll miss the Dolby Vision (LG OLED). Sounds like the Sony play has reports of bugs and manually having to switch to DV mode (mixed reports of if you should switch back when playing a non-DV disc).

At some point I was thinking of also getting a Xbox Series X but I suppose this would allow me to get a Series S (plus this player) for less, and neither this nor the xbox support DV for disc playback (no feature mismatch).

TIA for any feedback.

I'm in the same boat. Last year around Black Friday it went down to $350. Hoping for similar this year

This shouldn't be a deal breaker. Video capabilities of this player exceed most that have DV. I use it with my LG OLED and the picture blows away anything streamed in 4K.

Tempting. I think I'd rather see if we can get a DV-compatible player (that isn't buggy like the Sony) for a bit more with Black Friday season around the corner. Seems like a very good deal for $150 though if you don't have that many physical discs with DV and don't plan to.

I'd say DV support depends on your primary use case. Since you're actually buying a 4k player, I'm going to assume you're playing 4k discs. If your primary case is playing blu-rays (busted BDP needs replacement for example), and you just want something to handle the occasional 4k disc, sure, get this, or use a One X/Series X/PS5 for 4k playback (yes, the One X does 4k fine).

You can google for lists of 4k discs with DV.... it's not a lot but it is increasing. For me, this is my primary reason for wanting it; I want to play my 4k discs in the highest possible quality, so getting one now that doesn't support DV (especially since I have a One X that can play 4k discs) just doesn't quite make sense for me. As noted above, this is very YMMV.

If you're buying this for streaming apps? I think I'd rather get a streaming device that actually supports DV. Go get a $25 fire stick 4k.

Completely agree as a matter of fact the upscaling with BD disc can sometimes rival 4K streaming!

What separates players is how the they process HDR which has no standard. This is true for upscaling(to 4K) also.

I compared this(& 820) to LG,Samsung,Sony(700/800) players & Xbox using UHD/BD/dvd disc and Panasonic performed the best with all 3 formats especially BD.

Not all movies have DV added & many times the transfer on them are not that great.

I've had both(420/820) for about a year without one issue, can't say that about any of the others.

I bought this last year at $140. It was always under $150. Is it just inflation, lack of supply, that is making these (this) deal good?
