I just picked this up. I replaced the sata drive with an nvme and it recognized it. I'm pleasantly surprised.

For Sata-III vs NVME, you won't be noticing any difference. Not for activities you'll be doing on this system.

I'm thrilled they aren't using EMMC for once.

I've installed several different Linux distros in the past few months and have had zero driver problems.

I'm typing on Makulu Shift that not only allows you to use several desktops at once; but also lets you load it into RAM (yep, you can remove the usb stick and keep going without it using internal drives at all) - and you can even change to all the other desktops *while it's still loaded into just RAM*.

I bought a similar specced Lenovo ... and wow! I was pleasantly surprised at what this cpu could handle. The above model was a popular one in August and I was able to snag one. Happy with the build and performance of this laptop. If anyone is on the fence that this is going to be slow, I tell you... this would just be fine 90% of your apps except for gaming. I would strongly suggest another 4 GB ram for $10 and you should be good. My son in college has been using this with no complaints. This is no grandma's athlon... don't let the name fool you. Can't tell you about hp's build quality for Lenovo, but other than that ... it is decent laptop.

I just noticed... the display on this is worse than the lenovo only 1366 x 768

Yeah. "All" is certainly not true. i should have said "most". In my days since switching to Ubuntu at Hardy Heron days, I have mostly had wifi work. the exception being a USB-AC68 adapter and a cisco AM10 adapter.

But to your point, I never bought bleeding edge high end hardware. so it must have had time with the general Linux ecosystem for a few months to build in support.

This is a version of regular windows that is limited in few areas. You can only install apps that are present in the MS app store. That means you're stuck with MS edge browser for instance. They have developed this to have a better performance on a low end hardware and as a direct competition to Google's ChromeOS. But this laptop also gives you option to move out of S Mode and that's when comparing to entry level PC discussion starts.

It's limited to Windows store, easy to undo (just google it). I would say that the only weakness here is 720p screen. Other than that this laptop is enough powerful for 90% of people as school/home machine.

Not sure why many people are dogging this processor. It's on par with an i3-8145U and a tad bit slower to an i3-1005G1. Not shabby at all. It can handle Windows 10/11 and many apps just fine. The perceived slowness from this laptop will be from your memory when it maxes out.

I think this is a good deal for a windows-version of the chromebook at a similar price point. If this had touchscreen, I would be all in as a chromebook replacement.

Your range of i3 CPUs is valid, but don't forget to also account for the 4GB of RAM in this system. Perhaps you're daily driving a 4GB-equipped Windows 10 system and consider the performance acceptable for a tab or two (and no more). More likely is that many of the power users on Slickdeals are either using alternative platforms (Chromebooks, Linux, etc.) or are indeed running their Windows systems with 8GB or more. This issue is perhaps more than anything about Windows, which made great strides during Windows 10 (especially in the Surface line) but never really pared itself down for minimal spec systems to meet the mass of such devices that the market built for people hungry for the idea of a $200 Windows PC.

I think some of the i3 models cited in the post immediately above are valid comparisons. 8th and 10th generation should sufficiently fall into the category of modern. This is definitely a reference to the ultra low power U and Y revision dual-core, mobile models.

Contrast this to the threads regarding the i3-1125G4, a quad-core beast I call an i5 in all but name.

I did account for the RAM-- I mentioned that is what will slow the system down, not the processor.

Again this would be a great chromebook replacement imo (especially if it had a touchscreen), along with being a windows OS, if this laptop is intended to be used like that. At this price range it is a good deal. I'm not saying this laptop should be your daily driver by any means.

That was definitely a helpful qualification. Thanks for the response. I agree and certainly always try to highlight that these lower horsepower CPUs aren't broken, just not the entry point their price and positioning would make them. For a user going in with a full understanding of what the CPU can deliver, value can be had. For other users this can be a very disappointed foray into the world of choices I will try to avoid i the future.

My own daily driver media machine for my projector was for many years up through most of last year a Surface 3(!) but the CPU (a quad core Atom) and 2GB of RAM eventually couldn't get out of the way of the increasing demands made by continuously improving video sources. The big "upgrade" was to an Intel Quad Core Q9505s system (an incredibly early quad core CPU) equipped with 8GB of RAM. This machine handily chews through all my media needs, even if it does so at a relatively terrible efficiency per watt compared to modern systems.

Similarly, for anyone shopping for true "daily driver" Windows experiences even with basic productivity and browsing needs I'll always suggest some kind of high-power four core system paired with at least 8GB of RAM.
