you add the combo driver set along with the free tool. The price will be prorated for the tool set and the free tool. have the free tool ship to store, and not pick it up. you will get refunded on the free tool, so the combo set ends up costing 148

it's the same deal as the ryobi brushless driver for 92, you return the free tool to get the discounted price.
On the website HD said the whole thing was only available for local pick up. So when picking up, can I just say, I don't want to pick up the free tool? Do I return the free tool after picking up?

For those in the know, comparing apples to apples between sub compact and non sub compact, both being brushless, what am I losing, in terms functionality and performance, if I bought the sub compact model? I do like the fact that sub compact is lighter but I don't want to sacrifice any performance features just gain a lighter drill motor.

Lastly, as a weekend DIY guy, is it really worth getting the brushless (regardless sub-compact or nont) as I already have the older non-brushless model drill/impact motor.

thanks !!

If you already have an older brushed motor, why not just keep using it? That would be your point of reference too. Check the specs on your current equipment, and if you need more power then you know what numbers you need to surpass.

The non-subcompact set includes a hammer drill that can function as a regular drill w/ the hammer function turned off. The subcompact set includes a regular drill w/o hammer function. You may not need the hammer function though.

As for the impact, I personally like the regular brushless impact more than the subcompact one. The subcompact impact is a bit lighter but the head is actually longer than most (if not all) other models. It could be a problem when working in tight spaces.

Do different store pickup for each tools if that's available, that's what I did. If not, return it after picking it up, say you change your mind

Thanks. That's what I'll do. One thing I might try is to return without receipt and see if the price that comes up for the freebie is even higher. If it's not I'll just say "Oh, I'm sure I paid more than that, let me see if I can go home and find the receipt."

I need to copy and paste/save this sometime. I write this short summary everytime these come up. I am a professional carpenter .I install interior finish elements in an office setting. We hang markerboards,push-pin boards, acoustic panels, etc. I use a Makita subcompact impact driver on a daily basis . I am continually driving pan head self tapping screws through aluminum, drywall and into metal studs. Other crew members have used Dewalt, PorterCable,Milwaukee Fuel ,etc and after a month or so realize the Makita Subcompact is the lightest, ergonomic impact driver that suits our needs. And when they are on sale they've all upgraded/changed brands/converted to the Makita. I generally ,out of habit change my battery just before lunch and swap out for the afternoon/next morning. Will it break free the lugnuts on my car? I don't know,it might,I have not tried. I have a cordless impact WRENCH for that. For those that say it's a bit longer, hard to get in tight spaces, do y'all realize most people use these with a 2-1/2" bit holder protruding out the chuck so 1/16" between last years and this years model don't mean squat. I'm sorry even for a DIY ,this is light years ahead of Ryobi. Ryobi does have quite a range of available tools , but if I'm driving screws all day I'm going for lightest weight, best erogonomic , most comfortable driver I can find. It appears Ryobi has gotten a few lighter impacts/tools to market so the tide may change slightly in the future but for me Makita works very well day in -day out.

Just bought the Ryobi set a few weeks ago for $92, is this a lot better than the Ryobi? Debating on returning the Ryobi set and getting Makita, Dewalt, or Milwaukee.
Generally people like Makita tools more but if you are just using this stuff on a homeowners basis then the ryobi is fine and cheaper. If you are going to use these tools for work then, no question, upgrade.

Thank you for your feedback. I don't have any issues with my current older drill and impact motors. Was just comparing the benefits of going brushless as I've read you get more battery runtime with brushless. Then when I saw "sub compact" as well as brushless, got me thinking what am I losing with sub compact types.

This drill is legitimately my favorite power tool ever made.. it feels like something made for a black ops assassin. And I have a variety of tools from most brands. I have been using Makita drills for decades.. they are absolutely top notch.

Mostly the benefit of going subcompact is weight and size. Useful for tight spots.

I know a lot of cabinet installers will use a subcompact for example. They don't need a lot of power, but the smaller size and weight makes it easier to use.

I got this combo last year with the subcompact skilsaw. Worth it. That little saw is very underrated, and the drill and impact have been awesome. They are not powerhouses nor are they made to be. Even though the impact is a bit longer I have found the narrow head has been more important. The drill is a decent drill, nothing special but it does what it's supposed to. I have the xdt16 and it's better but I generally get the sub compact, I also have the xph07 drill, but I only use it when I need the power as the subcompact does most of what I need, and it's way lighter. I actually got rid of the Milwaukee M12 Fuel impact/drill kit as this subcompact kit is better.
