It's mostly that they actually reliably work. You can connect to them and when you tell them to change color they actually change. To me it's worth the extra money to not have the frustration.
What is so special about Philips Hue? Other brands are much cheaper like Kasa
They basically were the first to arrive on the scene. If you have the slightest idea what you're doing you can achieve the same things without spending as much these days. I do own Hue lights, and I just purchased this set at this price but I don't put all my eggs in one basket. I use IKEA Tradfri, TP-Link Kasa, Cree, Hue, LIFX, Govee, etc. They're all controlled via voice so for my purposes they're unified and if any one product/service ends, I'm not completely screwed.
For some cool DIY, you can even emulate a Hue bridge and not have to buy one if you are the tinkering type.

A physical interface outside of your phone or voice. Some of us like having smart bulb capability with a traditional interface for 90% of use. Hue has the most plug-and-play accessories I've seen, and a high build quality overall. Additionally, staying off WiFi is a valuable feature - I need router resources and bandwidth for higher priority devices, would prefer to avoid a mesh network, etc.

For colors, what brand (if any) matches color for Hue? I've started in the Hue ecosystem and I'm open to other brands, but I'd want color (or at least temp for adjustable white) to match when set in something like Hubitat.
Bonus if they are generally brighter too. I've got a vaulted ceiling I'd like to run either high density RGBW strips or a decent light strip channel with good diffusion and I'd like to not have "off" colors any place I've got a Hue product and another brand.

I bought these for my son a couple of years ago and in a two bulb fixture, these just are no bright enough for his room. They would probably be better suited for lamps.
Wait for the 100W. Amazon has them (albeit at 59.99 per bulb), showing 'In Stock Soon'. Costco has 4x 75W for $149. I have a 3-bulb fixture with 3x 60W, and on full brightness, it's too much above my head while watching TV, can read easily, and it throws an adequate amount of light.

Nothing you're saying is wrong, but basically nobody wants to roll their own bridge. If you're at that level of DIY/customization, I don't know that posting it to relative noobs on SD is really helping anyone :/.

Reliability. After 4 years they still work consistently, all others i had tried needs to be reset, reconfigured and not as reliable. Absolutely worth the extra $$ esp for a bigger home with many lights.

Do you have a link for the Costco deal? Not seeing it.

Whoa, I literally saw it yesterday, and was considering the $99 they had for Lily XL, and all of those items are gone now. I think the $129 play bar deal got people searching on the website, and wiped out their inventory. Damnit.
I have a bunch of Hue lights, and I was considering adding light strips under the bed, but Homekit is constantly searching for the lights making them impossible to turn on or off.
Does anyone know of a fix for this, or would buying a new hub solve my issue?
My personal experience with these has been nothing but positive.
I personally own about 10 of these bulbs around my 750 sqft apartment. Kithchen, corridor, living room, bedroom, and balcony. The lights are ALWAYS responsive- ive yet to had an issue with a bulb not connected to the wifi or in-sync with the others. I also have a hue light strip on my tv which responds the same way.
The app for this is very easy to use + it will work with homekit (apple).I've committed to apple smart products (TV, watch, phone, tablet, laptop and even home pods)- whats great about staying within the same ecosystem is the functionality it has with siri. Siri never has a problem turning on or off the lights, adjusting them as needed etc. I literally have not pressed the light switches in my apartment in over a year. I just come home and tell siri to turn on the lights or have an automation set-up as well.
Super fun product and guests are always impressed - really great product if you can invest in this!
