Terrible deal considering the 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, i7-1165G7 spec has been on sale a couple of times over the past few weeks (as recently a couple of days ago) for $1200. It sells out fast at that price, but worth waiting for another deal on it.

But is it worth the extra specs for basic productivity programs? Remember having one with half the specs and worked fine.

It may be okay for some, but this is slickdeals, and $1k for this spec is just not a slickdeal. $1200 for the spec I mentioned is a much better deal and worth waiting for. $200 more for 16GB, 1TB and i7 is a no brainer.

What does the extra specs give you in terms of basic everyday use? Would this only be noticeable for high processing programs? Obv not a tech person always just took whatever IT gave me so I'm curious to learn.

I mean, a driver who just needs to go to work can be fine with a 150 horsepower car, but if you just need to spend 20% more for 300hp car, that's a no brainer as mentioned above. I can be filled with a 1/4 lb burger being a skinny person for $4, but if I can get a 1/2 lb burger for just $0.80 more then the $4 burger is not a good price. The only time paying slightly more doesn't work is buying popcorn at the AMC theater because all price tiers are bad prices. Paying $200 more makes sense for double the drive space, double the ram and more processor cores. Sure, you won't need it now. But as the laptop ages, those specs definitely will make a huge difference.

As a comparison, here is a laptop with same specs except it's an i3 with 120 less lines of resolution for just $300

If you don't need the i5 and 120 extra lines of resolution, why pay $999? The extra $700 certainly does not justify the extra lightweight form factor, i5 and 1200p.

Let me preface by saying I never recommend any laptop with 8gb of soldered RAM.

However, the price in general is justified by it being a ThinkPad. That's why the i7/16gb is considered a great deal at $1200. You can get a Dell for a bit over half that price with an i7/16gb. I've had a couple X1 Carbons and they've been the best laptops I've ever used.

But regardless, I'd pass on this and wait for a good deal on a 16gb RAM for anyone looking.

I get ya. I am waiting for a 16GB X1 carbon myself.

That's a funny example, because many would equate Lenovo to AMC simply because everything is greatly overpriced considering the specs. Their MSRP's should be borderline illegal advertising they are so bad, inflated, and never actually charge that much. But even with their "sales" - they are always several hundred more than comparable specs. Sure you can argue build quality - but build quality doesn't cost 20-30% more.

If you're comparing specs without factoring weight and form factor size, then the Lenovo X1 carbons are a bad price of course. But you could say the same about Dell's XPS line. Laptops built in the 13.3" and approximate 2lbs market sector are mainly for business and travelers. You can't call the thin and light laptops illegal pricing. They sell well for a reason, just like the Macbook air.

Folks for years said Macbooks were overpriced until PC "ultrabooks" with quality displays, touchpads, keyboards, and thinner/lighter form factors came along and started retailing for $1,000 and up. These days, you don't hear the complaints as much, not when so many PC laptops with the above named attributes are now easily retailing for $1,500 or more and come with parts soldered in.

I've been eyeing an AMD-based T14 Gen2 for a while, but if the Carbon deal comes back, I'm snagging it first thing.

I still say Apple charges too much for a good margin of profits. Phone, laptop, smart watch. Their products are priced higher than the bang for buck you can get with alternatives. I would only consider the ipod touch and Macbook pro as the only reasonably priced devices

Note that I called the MSRP illegal pricing - for instance, the "MSRP" for this $999 sale laptop is $2,459. Tell me that an i5, 8gb, 256gb laptop is remotely close to being worth $2,459 regardless of size or weight, or that anyone would ever pay that much for this.

Some laptops have a soldered ram and an open slot, sounds like that's not the case with this one?

If 8GB is the max, this deal sucks.
