For those who ask on panel lottery....honestly I wouldn't go down the rabbit hole. You can do all the research and do calibration videos and check for dirty screen effect and whatever, and you may see a small thing that you then can't unsee for the rest of your life. OR you can just watch the TV, see if it looks good to you, play with the settings a bit (like turn off all the motion smoothing effects because I hate soap opera effect) and as long as it looks good TO YOU then just enjoy the friggin TV. Some people on these interwebs can take the joy out of everything by obsessing and nitpicking everything and then they are in an endless quest to find the "perfect" TV rather than just enjoying the content on their TV now.


obviously if there is something obvious like bad pixel or bad dimming zone or something then you will notice it. if you don't notice it then don't keep looking more and more to try to notice something

For those considering this TCL R646 vs the Sony X90J (or X90CJ at Costco), I just purchased both of these TVs, and plan to keep both for different use cases. They are similar TVs. Doing some minor work with settings, but no full scale calibration, the Sony does have slightly better picture quality to my eye. The biggest difference I tell between the two is brightness/reflection handling. The TCL will be staying in a family room perpendicular to a wall of windows, and handles the reflections much better with the screen finish and more importantly higher brightness. The Sony will be staying in a darker den area. The TCL looks better watching sports during the day. The Sony looks better watching Dune at night. YMMV!

Most of the negative reviews are for the Android TV OS. Sounds like the android OS is buggy but may have the advantage with Youtube and Kodi.

There's the option for Roku OS with good reviews: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tcl-...Id=6424217
It's up in the air but Roku OS might not have Youtube anymore soon.

It's TCLs integration of their picture settings with the OS that is really buggy. AndroidTV as an OS is pretty rock solid. The R646 has audio passthrough issues, issues with the TV locking up requiring it to be unplugged, VRR issues, motion issues to name a few. I think the picture quality is still very good, but everything else is suspect, and nobody else is to blame except TCL and their poor quality control.

Still at $1300 I'm very tempted

Ugh, Just had my 75U7G delivered today. Been waiting for the price drop for this TCL but finally gave up. Now I need to think if I should return it and get the TCL.

Definitely return it, the U7G is good but the 75 inch version is IPS based.. This 6 series will destroy it in contrast and black levels.
