Front page deal in November, now a bunch of thumbs down. Am I missing something?

The software was so buggy and there were so many bad panels that Best Buy yanked the entire line from the store (to the extent that they completely removed the product pages). As such, it will be a while before they regain people's trust. People will be very cautious about trusting whether this firmware update will actually fix all the problems (past updates have largely failed to adequately address things). TCL also has a history of trying to run various OS with underpowered cpus to begin with.

Honestly who uses the onboard apps, that's where all the complaints are coming from. Everyone has a firestick/roku/appletv/htpc/etc. if they really care about performance. The only thing that matters is the panel, which has great reviews.
Just cancelled my 75u7g order and bought this instead.

Reviews were for bad panels also. Also the onboard apps on a 1300 tv should work better than a 25 dollar fire stick if it does not there are major Engineering issues.

If you don't mind, what made you pick this over the Hisense? I'm currently looking at these 2.

The 75" u7g is an IPS panel, the r646 is VA. Aside from that there aren't huge differences. If you're watching in a dark room you'll notice the IPS glow, which I'm not a fan of. IPS will have better color accuracy and better viewing angles
If I didn't care about it being 120hz I'd have gone with the u6g or if I wanted a 65" I'd have gone with the u8g. This ticks all the boxes at the price range I was looking at.

Is that a serious question?

I don't know. I saw a Samsung QLED 82" for $1400. I'm sure this is a really nice TV but if I am going to spend this, I'm wondering if I should just hold out for OLED to drop since I am just looking for a TV in my home theater in the basement (no outside lighting)
