Yes, but you'll have to spend many $100s of dollars to even use one of the new Alderlakes… On top of buying the chip. New mobo, new ddr5 ram… It'll be almost a $1k to get even the i5 working with components that you already have.

Plus your energy bill will go up and you'll need a room a/c to be able to survive while playing anything…

this vs. the 5600x?
I'm waiting for a 5600X deal cause I want gen 4 NVME capability, and don't need the 5800X, plus some complain it runs hot.

They do run hot because its 8 cores on a single chiplet. Ive heard you kind of need to undervolt them and then youre fine though. The 5600x is what I have. I am not sure the 5800 is worth it. Ive had like 5600x for like 5 months though so when I was buying the 5800x was way too much. I went with the 5600x because it was only $300.

If you check benchmarks, the 5800x is like single digits faster than the 5600x. Not worth it(for gaming anyways). If I was going to upgrade, id go with the 5900x.

These CPUs are perfect for people trying to upgrade an older Ryzen computer to a much faster CPU. I do not recommend buying these CPUs for a completely new build. Make sure your motherboard supports the Ryzen 5000 series and you may need to do a BIOS update first.

For those considering the 5800x (which is 300$US), the 5700G is a tad slower, but you save a bit of money, as the 5700G comes with a cooler and the 5800x does not. If you planned to buy a cooler anyway and have a dedicated video card, then might as well go with the 5800x.

The reason the prices are crashing is because the 12th Gen Intel CPUs just released and it's ideal to buy an intel CPU in many of the price tiers now if you're building a new computer. The 12600K is significantly faster than the 5800x and DDR5 is optional.

I'm building a new machine and specifically choosing to go with AMD.

Not saying your info is wrong but it's always best to avoid broad "blanket" statements. Not everyone is building a gaming rig.

In my case, I'm building a home server. Specifically a virtualization (VM) host.

The power consumption plays a big factor for me as this server will be running 24/7. The new Intel chips are more power hungry than the 5600/5700g.

Also, while the 12600K is a nice CPU and clearly has good performance, its hybrid architecture means it technically only has 6 "real" cores (at least as far as a hypervisor is concerned).

My use case is not standard, for sure, but the new Intel chips are not superior in every situation or workload.

I am aware my comments do not apply to everyone, but they're intended to help most people building or upgrading their computer that are looking for advice. It's okay if some people disagree with my advice.

You have a very specific case to require a CPU of very specific parameters, and I assume your situation applies to very few people here, and is less likely to help people here.

I did mention a one Intel CPU that you seem to dislike for your case, but there many other Intel CPUs that fit what you're looking for, perhaps the 11400, which was faster, the same TDP, and very price competitive, even AFTER the 5600G's sale.

I'm not really here to argue your one specific use case that is unlikely to help anyone else. I'm glad you seem to know what you're looking for already and that this seems to be a wonderful price reduction for you.

You're gonna run the world's worst docker/unraid setup with 8 Ryzen cores that will definitely run hotter than the last three generations of Intel?
I'll just leave this here for you. 😉

I would be glad to see Intel back in the game, but I want to know what their exploit situation is like. Seemed like every month Intel CPUs were plagued with an exploit, and speed enhancing functions (hyperthreading) were a reason. I'm also wondering why Intel has been unable to shrink size and they are still cranking out sweaty, power hog 10nm CPUs. Google and Microsoft are still buying AMD for their data centers

Plex demands depend on exactly what you're doing with it. This will most likely fit your needs, but it depends on whether you're transcoding, what resolution you're transcoding at, and how many streams you need to transcode simultaneously. If you're not transcoding, it will run on a potato. If you are, look here to evaluate: https://support.plex.tv/articles/...my-server/

it is, just grabbed the 5800x for $299.99 from mc. They just cut the price on the 5800s late last week.
