Yes, but you'll have to spend many $100s of dollars to even use one of the new Alderlakes… On top of buying the chip. New mobo, new ddr5 ram… It'll be almost a $1k to get even the i5 working with components that you already have.

Plus your energy bill will go up and you'll need a room a/c to be able to survive while playing anything…

I hope this is the start of sale prices that will be seen at other retailers -- amazon, newegg, etc.

That 5700G looks nice as an upgrade to my 3600. Same TDP, comes with a heatsink+fan, 8 cores and zen 3 still. Nice for my audio workstation application.

Depends IMHO. If need performance- 5600x is a much better CPU, also has PCIE 4.0 support. When used with 4.0 SSD and video cards you will get probably 15- 20% better performance. But if don't care about performance, 5600g has the best IGP video, like 1030+ level. Those are crazy expensive these days so you are saving $120-130 on a video card right away

5600g or 5700g Vega can performs like the maximum of rx560...
If you have 1060+ GPU I would choose 5600x

These CPUs are perfect for people trying to upgrade an older Ryzen computer to a much faster CPU. I do not recommend buying these CPUs for a completely new build. Make sure your motherboard supports the Ryzen 5000 series and you may need to do a BIOS update first.

For those considering the 5800x (which is 300$US), the 5700G is a tad slower, but you save a bit of money, as the 5700G comes with a cooler and the 5800x does not. If you planned to buy a cooler anyway and have a dedicated video card, then might as well go with the 5800x.

The reason the prices are crashing is because the 12th Gen Intel CPUs just released and it's ideal to buy an intel CPU in many of the price tiers now if you're building a new computer. The 12600K is significantly faster than the 5800x and DDR5 is optional.

Isn't MoBo for intel 12th gen too pricy? that would came with affordable GPU.

In for a 5600g at 199$

Got the 2 year insurance for $20 and i can give it back for my $200 to go in for an upgrade. I didn't know microcenter did this. It reminds me of phone carriers trade-in deals. Except this is for CPUs and you get the whole price you paid towards your upgrade.. granted it cost $20 and hopefully it doesn't go up in value and worth more to sell as third party within the next 2 years.

Im upgrading from a 2700x. Downgrading from 8 core to 6 core but around a 20% more efficient core speed, w/$20(2 year) full-refund warranty with microcenter at checkout for $235 OTD.

So, I'm thinking next year I can turn my 5600g in next Black Friday.. for the $200 towards a newer more future proof generation of ryzen cpu that everyone's talking about. Hmmm..

I mean this as politely as possible, but you need to do some more research on power consumption differences between AMD and Intel.

There's simply no way a 10nm Intel CPU with a 125w tdp is going to perform as efficiently as a 7nm AMD CPU with 65w tdp rating (tdp ratings in general are a bit of a joke but that's another discussion...).

Intel chips DO idle fairly decently but under any load they jump significantly. Under PL2 (turbo) mode can easily double or near triple their power consumption.

Intel's E processors allow the OS to idle and run tasks with low energy draw... so there is that. Personally, I prefer the Ryzen approach. I just bought a 5950 to upgrade a 3900 I had... and decided instead I am going to build a second machine so bought an ASUS 570 hero MB... End of life, but stable. Perfect to move the 3090 I scored a year ago over and put a 2060 in the 3900. Yall know you can earn back your investment with the Ryzen 3900, 3950, 5900, and 5950's because of level 3 cache and a little crypto mining... As much as I hate it, gonna turn the 3900 loose to make 3-4 bucks a day. Principle, gotta make buying the 5950 cost neutral in the end.

I am planning to go with a 5700G but i am not up to date on selecting a full ATX motherboard. Not planning much gaming, mostly multitasking with some computational tasks. Any reccs to help narrow down the choices?

Honestly unless you're planning to do something extreme, it's very difficult to pick a 'wrong' motherboard.

Take a peek at the AM4 chipsets [wikipedia.org] and see if anything is important to you that sticks out. You'll likely want the 500 line, probably b550. You can probably find many guides comparing the chipsets [build-gaming-computers.com] out there. After you decided what chipset to go, you can probably find guides comparing motherboards for that specific chipset [anandtech.com]. Then peek at the different boards of that type, and see which ones have what you need.

It may be cheaper and possible to use a b450 board, but you may get into an odd situation where the BIOS isn't updated enough, and won't boot with your CPU. Probably not worth saving the money on that.

Thanks, this is great information and exactly what i needed to be able to evaluate the different options. I'll probably go with a B550 board but this helps make a much more informed decision. Thanks again and repped!
