I've had 2 optomitrists refuse to give me that info because they knew what I was doing with the info instead of buying an identical pair from their shop for $300+. Costco vision center has a machine they pop in front of your eyes for 2 seconds and they give you the pupil distance. Didn't have to be a member, sign anything, or pay for anything.

I've been ordering glasses from Goggles4u for like a decade (five or six pairs per year because they're so darn cheap with promo codes working all the time). I've also ordered from Zenni. This year, I tried KITS when I needed glasses quickly and I'm very happy. Quality on the two pairs I've ordered has been noticeably higher than Goggles4u.

I ordered with anti-glare coating and it came to about $20 shipped. My first order arrived two days after placing it. Second order took 3 or 4 days. Around the time of the second order I also placed an order with Goggles4u (I like having a few pairs and the cost is prescription sunglasses is far more expensive with KITS since you can pretty much always use a 70% off code at Goggles4u). The glasses I ordered from Goggles4u took more than a month to arrive this last time.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I'm a happy customer of a competitor and I'd still recommend KITS and buy from them again. I would note though that this code is on all the time, so this isn't a new deal or one you can't always get.

Yeah, I did that and then noticed in the order confirmation - verify prescription by phone and then in the email it states they'd contact my doctor about my prescription and to make sure my prescription is accurate because doctors don't always pick up the phone. Not sure if that's some sort of legal thing they just have to state or what.

How did you all get your pupil distance? The doctor I went to refuse to give me the measurements and a couple apps I tried gave me all different number every time
Simple options...

Wear an old pair of glasses you don't care about(you could buy readers) and look in a mirror. Using something to make a mark(sharpie, marker etc) draw a line where you see your pupils. Measure the distance between the lines in millimeters. If you have trouble seeing the mirror I suggest getting a friend to help and trying to look far away.

Get a friend to grab a piece of paper and place the edge over your eyes. Look at something in the distance and have them draw a line where they see the middle of your pupil. Measure it with a ruler in millimeters.

modern ios devices with eye measure which works well. If you use apps and are getting a range of results you are likely focusing at looking at the phone. It is normal to have a range of PD between reading and distance. Normally about 2 mm difference.

Purchase a PD measuring ruler or device. Will likely need a friend to help.

I am not a lawyer, but I think that under Federal law your health care provider has to release a copy of your medical records. Tell the doctor that you are willing to contact your state Attorney General and licensing board if he refuses. I doubt that he/she wants that trouble.
Basically it depends on the State. Most States consider it a function of ordering glasses so the shop measures the PD not the Doctor. In many States the Doctor is not allowed to own the optical shop. Classically the optical shop would provide a location at reduced rent to the Doctor. So they don't want to upset the Shop by giving PD.

Shops like you needing them for PD as you end up forced to buy there. SO then you get into the overpriced lab issue in the US. Mainly because certain firms acquired many of the labs. Not against shops but it is rough when most end up costing more after insurance then simply buying online. I also tended to find most of the frames were low quality, or at least the few that looked good and fit.

Switching to online ordering takes a little effort and you are likely to have an issue or two, but eventually you will learn what you like and can do reasonably well. Normally you need to find a frame you like, take down the measurements and look for similar frames. There is also a bit of a curve to learn the best bang for the buck lenses etc.

I couldn't find a pair I liked with this deal as I am a bit picky. The lenses options and AR options were problematic for me...

Just tell them you need it for configuring your VR headset. Either way, it's easy to measure yourself with a ruler or free apps, but if they "refuse" I would refuse to give them my business anymore on principle.

Is the PD only needed for progressives?
You need PD for distance glasses in general. It can be an issue in other situations but rarely. PD is slightly more important for a good progressive lenses then plan distance lenses.

Progressives are problematic for various reasons. You need to pick the right frame/lenses shape. Have a good amount of measurement data. A Good Doctor and a good lab can really help here.

Personally have not found a good pair of progressives for myself.

Five people I know who wear glasses and we have talked about Progressives.

1) likes what is called workplace progressives. They have a wider field of view but are not good for longer distance. Basically good from thirty feet to reading, though they seem to see long distance better than I would expect. Exceptionally happy with them.

2) likes regular progressives but doesn't use them for reading just middle distance and far. Happy with them and considers them a must.

3-4) Basically ordered it with frames which were too small so they find them difficult to use. You really tend to need to order a lense which has reasonable height.

5) is scared to try them as they think it will be difficult switch.

Has anyone figured out how to filter the glasses by half-rim/full-rim yet?
Also, when material says metal, what metal is it? aluminum? Iron? titanium? Idon't mind paying a little more for a better pair since it is something you wear every day, but it is kinda frustrating that you have no idea what you are buying...

I'm pretty sure its by law they have to give you the prescription, I would report them. we don't need people like this...they can't charge us more than what they agree with the insurance for the exam but they can over price every thing else...especially glasses and contact lens. I've been wearing contacts for over 20 years and this new optometrist wanted to charge me for a fitting test...when I've been wearing that brand and style for over 5 years.

Time to find a new optometrist if you can. That's pretty lame that they'd gatekeep your vision info. It's not a number you want to guess.

Transitions adds on at least $129. Cheaper than some other places like Zenni I think.

The Eyeglass Rule defines a prescription as "the written specifications for lenses for eyeglasses which are derived from an eye examination, including all of the information specified by state law, if any, necessary to obtain lenses for eyeglasses." The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 16CFR456.2

The PD is needed for a prescription. Your PD is different for far and near vision. Eyeballs move closer when seeing near (look at your nose) than when looking afar.

FYI, if you have kaiser medical insurance you can actually go get your eyes checked there instead. It was free for me, so there really is no point for me to even carry vision insurance anymore, other than maybe filing an out of network claim. They also gave me my PD with no issues.

Take a measuring tape or ruler and measure the distance between the middle of your left eye and the middle of the right. Usually in the 60-65.
