I'm looking at the medium xf spinning rod. I'm looking for a quality budget friendly all purpose rod (small bass to catfish and walleye... possibly trout as I'm in CO) to pair with a new Daiwa legalis reel I picked up on another deal. Would an extra fast action work for this, or should I wait for something else? My buddy who knows a lot more than I do recommends Shimano.

You'll be happy with this, make sure you choose the spinning rod version not the casting one

I have a few of these. Be prepared with some super glue to repair the rod yourself. What happens is the Carbon fiber trim piece around the reel fastening nut breaks loose from the plastic. I called Shimano when it happened twice. I could have sent it back for them to repair but didnt want to pay $25 shipping in a big tube and wait 2-3 weeks to get it back. I glued them myself. Looks as good as new. Other than that, these and the Lews Carbon Fire rods at Dicks perform about the same. You would have had to pay $400 for this rod 20 years ago for this level of performance . Its a great rod. Light. Comfortable. Sensitive enough for me to outfish most.
