I have the chainsaw. Motor on the first one died after a year. Second one stops randomly even with a full charge, new chain with properly adjusted tension and excellent oiling. Of my many ryobi purchases, was the most disappointing.

I just bought the 14" chainsaw kit a couple weeks ago because a tree fell on our fence. First time chainsaw user/owner. I went with Ryobi 40v (36v) line since I use the 18v line and have had good experiences, the price point - even at regular price - beat out the comps from Dewalt/Milwaukee/etc, and reviews were generally positive.

I think this is perfect for a homeowner needing to do storm cleanup and cutting small trees down (while leaving big projects to the pros). I pondered getting a gas saw, but for intermittent use I think cordless makes the most sense. Less wieldy than a gas saw and none of the engine maintenance. More convenient than plug-in electric. The only downside is charge time/battery life, but for homeowner projects its probably not an issue (just take a break!).

RE: quality/performance vs. other brands. I didn't see many negative reviews, but I take reliability reviews and anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt. Personal experience with the line and customer service is likely the bigger factor for most buyers in terms of reliability. There may be a delta between this and Milwaukee/Dewalt/Makita, but considering the price difference, I think it comes down to preference and whether you are in the ecosystem or not.

Also, for intermittent DIY use of these kind of hyperspecialized tools, I think people spend way to much time trying to figure out what the "best" is or which "will last longer" even when it is a tool that maybe you will use 2-3 times ever. The proper comp for most folks needs to be "how much would it cost to pay a pro?" and "what is the likelihood I will ever use this again?" Maybe the Milwaukee is better but it is also (16") $>$300 for tool only and pushing $500 with a battery. For less than what it would cost to have a pro do it, I got a chainsaw, all the protective gear, and removed the fallen tree and a widowmaker that had hung up over a trail behind our house. Anything beyond that is house money at this point.

Obviously, if you are regularly using a saw, your decision tree would be different.

FYI you can add a 16" bar/chain to this.

However, if you already have 40v batteries, get the 16" saw at $160 instead. While Ryobi claims on a HD post that its the same saw motor as the 16" and 18", I'm not sure that's true (I looked at parts diagrams and it doesn't bear out). Further, the 16" has an adjustable oiler and a manual chain brake which the 14" doesn't have.

Yea I want a blower and trimmer to replace my aging 20v B&D. Going to pick up one of those 40v/300W inverters too.

IMO.. that pole saw is dumb. The ryobi 18v pole saw is fierce enough for anything you should be pole sawing and the added weight of 40v would be a negative.
Also.. the 40v power head is a much smarter investment as you can just pop on a pole saw attachment.. then switch it back to a weed whacker.. or hedge trimmer.. or sweeper.. or brush cutter... or leaf blower.. or rotatiller... or edger.

I have the 18v pole saw and a pole saw attachment for me ryobi brushless carbon power head. They both work good.
I also have the 18v pole saw and it's heavy enough when extended and work on tree branches, the 40v battery would make handling the pole saw unbearable for longer periods of time. I have the Ryobi 40v self-propelled lawn mower with dual 40v batteries so know how much they weigh.

Tempted.... but I've limited myself to the ryobi 18v and for the higher volatges the EGO 56 volt products.
I wish ryobi would have went with a higher voltage than 40v and built a slightly better mower.
even though a little pricier, so far i like my EGO products.
We seriously need a national standard for rechargable batteries!!! Mfg's can choose to adopt them or not, but it would benefit consumers and the planet.

Ridiculous prices on tools just because they use a battery. And, overpriced batts. are also just jacking up the margins.

I have DeWalt drill, impact and oscillating tool. I want a chainsaw and a pruner would help a lot. Should I jump into another ecosystem for this deal?
The Ryobi 40v system is the largest if you are in need of several tools. I have also used the DeWalt chainsaw and another friend bought one and returned it after it broke the first use. I would not recommend. Even the one that didn't break was disappointing and underpowered. I now own several Ryobi 40v tools including both of these saws. The chainsaw works so much better than I expected and the 4ah battery is big enough to cut down and limb a small-medium sized tree. The pole saw is not the greatest and seems to shut off if you tilt it too far from being upright. When you need it though, it's super handy. Overall I would recommend Ryobi's 40v system.

if you are shopping for a cordless chainsaw, I would go

EGO POWER+ 56-volt 18-in Brushless Cordless Electric Chainsaw 5 Ah (Battery and Charger Included)

The weight is resting on the branch you are cutting, its nothing compared to the fatigue of a manual pole saw.

I recently got both of these. Love them both. Pole saw was great for getting a lot of high limbs down. Also, in comparison to the 18v, the blade is longer. It is heavy, but it has built in hook that allows you to rest it on branches. The chainsaw cut up limbs like butter.

If you are willing to go through hassle of returning I'd keep an eye on tools direct (not direct tools) eBay store. They are Home Depot returns. I go the pole saw for $45 (tool only) and the chainsaw for $70 with 4ah battery. Those prices were when they were running extra 50% off and now are only running extra 40% off. Both were brand new- no issues. However, I have gotten stuff from them missing parts and had to return.

just my two cents but i have both of these purchased separately. only used in the yard for fairly light task but both have worked awesomely. No issues with either. I have cut a few fairly large logs with the chainsaw. I just go slow and let the saw do the work.

I wish Ryobi would make a backpack battery with a short cable that went in to the tools. This would be universally useful for so many situations.. Leaf blowing, Pressure washing, chainsawin', weed wacking, all the nail guns, everything. Since you'd be carrying it on your back you could make the batteries 2 to 10 times larger and/or very high voltage.

Need help from homeowners! I just bought a house with a large yard and am panicking about my "fall cleanup" bill of 650. Never wanna pay that again lol.

I'm heavily invested in the 18v line with Ryobi but have no 40v products.

How do they compare to the competition?

More importantly what are some of the must have tools for DIY fall/spring yard work?

I cut down an oak tree a month ago. My bro in-law brought his Dewalt cordless chainsaw. It performed half as well as my $40 Portland corded chainsaw from Harbor Freight. The Dewalt saw did burned out. But exchanging it at HD was simple. My bro said it was the 2nd time the motor burned out on him.

If you are not cutting hardwood like an oak tree you are probably fine. It's convenience and lighter than my Portland. By the way, cutting down an oak tree was a BIG job.
The HF portland chainsaw is great for the price

How large is large? I've got a 1-acre with a lot of landscaping and trees in a pretty fancy HOA, I do all my yard myself.

Got a gas tractor for main mowing, and all Ryobi 40V tools for everything else, I really like them, especially the Expand-It system. If I was just jumping into 40V tools, I would maybe get that 20" refurb mower with 6AH battery from DTO when it goes on sale for ~$140 (great deal on just the battery alone and the mower is just a bonus, I use it for smaller areas that my tractor doesn't easily fit), and pick up an expand it pole with weed trimmer, get the leaf blower attachment, and optionally maybe a edging attachment and hedge trimmer attachment (I have both and like them).

With a 6A and a 4A battery you should be good for an afternoon of yard work. Maybe find a 2A battery for times when you just need a quick hit of power and don't feel like the extra weight.

Good luck!
