seems like a ton of reviews against this particular combo complain about the batteries barely holding a charge

No, these are of lesser quality than the ones mentioned and are probably best suited for a homeowner for basic use. I actually prefer the DCD791 as it's a compact version of the DCD796.

Yeah these 1.3ah batteries are a joke. There is no reason for DEWALT to keep making them other than to be able to overcharge for the larger batteries. These tools needs AT LEAST the 2.0 to be able to provide any usable runtime

They're brushless, but not XR. XR tools are the highest tier in the 20V max platform, these are the entry level line of tools.

The battery is added if you don't choose anything. Choose first, before putting it in your cart. Deal is not dead.

cannot get free tool to work, stuck with the free battery - adding any other will not get discount, only the battery

Don't add the free gift to your cart from the free gift product page, do it from the tool combo page. Go right under where it says "$179" on the drill/driver combo page. It says "Select your free gift" under there. Click on that and it will add all the items to your cart together.

I've seen the 1.3's described as demo batteries, which makes a lot of sense lol. Enough for someone to pull the trigger and make some noise
