Synology NAS are especially good as Apple Time Capsule backup device replacement and I've installed lots of these for that purpose.

IMO this model is too slow for anything else.

NAS with 2 bays is always better than a single bay (Having a single drive is just begging for data loss).

This will work great for anyone who doesn't need docker or the transcoding (Plex, Emby)

Good news that synology deals are starting to pop up. Been waiting for a deal on 920 so hopefully that comes soon.
Just as importantly, drive prices are coming back down to earth.

Good luck!

Is this good for cloud access and working with nextcloud? I'm new to both nas and home cloud.

I'll wait for a 220+. Currently rocking that one w/ 10GB RAM and need a spare unit for off-site backup. Always following the 3-2-1 rule.

EDIT: Or.. I can just grab a raspberry Pi, load netxcloud and add JBOD via USB 3.0 lol Smilie

We've had this one since July 2020 (paid $170 then). Our previous Synology NAS lasted about 8 years. We have two WD Red drives (2TB) setup in Raid 1 and I use Backblaze to backup all data to the cloud. We use it primarily as a shared, secure file server for my wife's business and personal files/photos/music. It is perfect for our needs and would definitely recommend it if this is what you are looking for. The Drive Client works great as well (similar to DropBox).

I would wait for a DS220+. They go on sale for $240.
DS220+ runs tons more software that is not available for this.
It can also have the memory upgraded to 6GB, while this is stuck with 512MB.
DS220+ also has a much faster CPU.

Backblaze B2 is just great, and does versioning off the bat.

Yes, sometimes they come straight from Synology.

if you just need this as a network drive for sharing docs/pics, probably no reason to pay for for a 220+ right?

Amazon rarely/never price matches. You'd have to return and rebuy, or possibly buy second unit and return in the first ones place (not saying I recommend that).

That's how we use our 220j (see my comment above your's). It is perfect for that functionality.
