Wait what is this google voice number thing. Me and my wife are planning on switching to Mint from t-mobile after seeing that our monthly data usage isn't more than 10gb for each of us. Can you explain how to go about this? Also would this better if we were planning on getting phones to during their black Friday deal at mint
Google Voice is Google's free phone service. It's been around for more than a decade. You port your number into it(or get a new one for $20 I think) and then you have it forever even if you change phone plan providers. They have an app for both iPhone and Android that replaces your stock phone, message, and voicemail apps. At times they thought about integrating it deeply into Android, but I assume their carrier partnerships would suffer if they did, so it's still an app you need to download from the app store. You can also use it on your PC if you want. Once you have a Google voice number you can use it on any phone with any service just by installing the app. No more porting numbers ever. With this, you can always use new customer sims from mint or anyone else if you want. You can use it with data only sims as well. It has all the same stuff most people want on phones. WiFi calling, spam blocking, visual voicemail, cheapish international calling. Google fi is basically Google voice with a data plan included.

You can totally try it out with a new number on your current phone if you want - the service is free. 2 numbers will ring on one phone if you want!

I don't have any advice on new phones. I'd just get the best deal you see for a phone you want.

I do not see any reference to the Steel Book Case promotion in that link you referenced. The current promotion only states 3 free months (additional ) coz you are paying for the 3 months netting a total of 6 months.

If you want to buy a new phone they are also doing 24 months for the price of 12 with select phones. And $45 off any plan with select iPhones.

Use a referral link to get a $15 account credit too for your first renewal.

The recovery fees are the government taxes, they will apply at every activation and renewal and you can't use referral bonuses toward them. You do have to pay them on free months too I believe. The amount will vary by state but expect around 20%. The gov has really been jacking those taxes and fees up the last few years to make up for lost fees on traditional landlines that have been going away.

One person may use 1GB to do all that and another may use 100GB. The only way to know is to look at your phone's history or previous bills to see what your typical usage is. I am always on wifi at home, but use it plenty when away from home for GPS, internet, email, Teams calls, etc and am under 1G per month. But I'm not one of the zombies watching videos 24/7 as they walk into traffic either. So you need to look at your historical usage.

I just noticed that as well. I wonder if you have to pay this if you were to buy the same deal from Best Buy.

As other commenters have mentioned, it's much better to get this at Target. 5% off all phone cards(and all gift cards!) and no extra fees. Using a Google voice number you can basically double dip this deal twice a year. The promo always happens in December and usually best buy or Target runs something similar in the summer - they have regular sales on mint cards. $7/month is pretty insane for decent phone service. I've done exactly this for years. Really happy mint customer.
Such an awesome idea! Thanks for suggesting 5% off deal from target and Google voice thing !

Just purchased my 4GB Mint card from Best Buy. Total was $47.71. No $10 recovery fee.

Doesn't GV have issues with receiving texts from some short SMS codes, like banking login verification digits? That's what I read last time I checked...
